Harry Styles, Douglas Booth, Russell Crowe And More Great Men Show Support For #HeForShe Campaign

Emma Watson has helped shed light on the issue and now all our favourite male celebrities are pledging their support publicly. As if we needed any excuse to love them more.

On Saturday, actress and activist Emma Watson gave speech on gender equality to the United Nations, as part of the #HeForShe campaign.

It was a brilliant, rabble rousing speech on many levels, but it was different to some that have gone before it for one particular reason.

And that was its approach to men.

Addressing the idea that "feminism" has become disappointingly synonymous with "man hating", she proposed that gender inequality is an issue that affects both sexes.

Not just in the sense that men's wives, girlfriends, sisters and daughters find themselves suffering from a prejudice that decrees them unworthy of equal pay, respect or dominion over their own bodies, but also in the sense that stereotypes of "masculinity" are directly damaging to men's lives.

To quote Emma Watson:

"We don’t want to talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are. When they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive, women won’t be compelled to be submissive. If men don’t need to control, women won’t have to be controlled."

So, considering this is an important issue for men on just about every level, it is great to see so many fabulous men joining the #HeForShe campaign.

Take a look at some of the famous faces that are publicly pledging their support:

Could we love this man any more:

YES DOUGLAS BOOTH, you brilliant hunk of feminism:

He's not just "father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife", trying to seek vengeance on rotten Emperors. He's supporter of wives and daughters and sons the world over.

Woot!

Yup, even Jim Chapman is in on the act. You go Jim, we bet Tanya appreciates it.

LOOK AT ALL THESE GREAT MEN:

Now, of course, it's time to put some of these TwitPics into action, because showing support is just the first step.

As Matt Damon rightly proclaimed, it all starts with education:

It follows to encourage participation in world politics:

But if you feel you're not in a position to influence either of these things (although, trust us, you probably are) there are many, many ways you can help sway a cultural shift for the better.

Start with a change of attitude, towards both sexes - allowing for people to exist wherever on the spectrum of gender they feel they belong.

Do not commit, encourage or condone acts of sexual violence against anyone - man, woman or child.

Don't be afraid to speak up, in the event that you feel someone is being objectified, poorly treated or disadvantaged on account of gender.

"Feminism" is not a dirty word.

It is the word we have, it is the one that will continue to be used and what it stands for is so much more important than the misuse afforded it by the few.

In fact, one the best and easiest ways for you to contribute is unbelievably simple.

Sometimes, it pays just to listen:

Smart men in the public eye have been standing up for gender equality for years and years, but let's hope the #HeForShe campaign finds backing from countless more.
