Golden Globes 2015: Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Perfectly Sum Up Feminism In Hollywood

Including the best George Clooney joke you'll ever hear

There's a reason they've been asked to host it three times.

Last night Tina Fey and Amy Poehler brought their unique and rib-ticklingly funny brand of humour to the Golden Globes and one of their many targets was the precarious position of women in Hollywood.

Double standards in beauty, weight and achievements were all fair game for the comediennes who couldn’t resist roasting A-lister George Clooney for the second year in a row.

After his performance in ‘Gravity’ last year, Tina and Amy joked that the 53-year-old “would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age”.

Fast forward a year, eternal bachelor George has done the unthinkable and married barrister Amal Alamuddin – not that that saved him from the razor sharp wit of Tina and Amy.

Talking about his new wife’s many, many accomplishments, the ladies pointed out a rather bittersweet irony:

NAILED IT.
NAILED IT.

“Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, with Kofi Annan regarding Syria and was selected for a three person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip.

“So tonight, her husband is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Fair play to George, he laughed heartily at the joke while Amal merely smiled the smile of a woman who probably knows she’s the smartest person in the room.

Impossible beauty expectations were also the butt of the joke as Tina Fey pointed out the gruelling make-up regime Steve Carell had to go through for his role in ‘Foxcatcher’.

“Steve Carell’s ‘Foxcatcher’ look took two hours to put on, including his hairstyling and make-up. Just for comparison, it took me three hours today to prepare for my role as human woman.”

At least George can laugh about it...

Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls site started the #AskHerMore hashtag last night, to encourage journalists to go beyond the same old fashion questions when interviewing women on the red carpet.

"The #RedCarpet is open and we want the media to #AskHerMore! Let's go beyond 'who are you wearing?' and ask better questions! #GoldenGlobes"

The world of Twitter was quick to point out that rarely if ever do male nominees get asked what designer they’re wearing, instead they are allowed the luxury of talking about their character, the movie or even global issues.

Alas, E! must have missed the hashtag as their coverage was the same old stereotypical questions – movies for men, clothes for women.

No word on who will host next year’s Golden Globes but we can bet they won’t be half as funny, or astute as Amy and Tina.
