Fake Pregnancy Tests Available For Sale Online To 'Trick' Unsuspecting Partners

Used positive pregnancy tests and fake baby scans are being bought and sold on sites like eBay and Craigslist

Halloween is round the corner and for those of you sick of dressing up as a sexy cat, sexy nurse or a sexy banana there is a new sick and twisted costume that’s sure to put the fear of God into people.

For less than the cost of an inappropriate Frozen princess outfit, you can scare your partner with a fake positive pregnancy test.

We say fake – they are real positive tests, peed on by real pregnant women and they are on sale for as little as £20 on sites like Gumtree, Ebay and Craigslist.

Many of these questionable props are being touted as HILARIOUS (not) gag gifts to prank unwitting boyfriends and husbands but there is a darker side to these unhygienic online purchases.

“Whether you are using it for your own amusement such as a prank, or to blackmail the ceo of apple who you are having an affair with I DON’T CARE AT ALL this is an absolutely no questions asked type of deal,” writes one business-savvy seller.

While there is no real moral imperative on the pregnant pee donor, the acknowledgement that there is a more sinister use for these items is unsettling.

A culture of faked pregnancies and contested parenthood has been parodied and made farcical by a generation of lie detector tests on “talk shows” like Maury and Jeremy Kyle.

For a woman to resort to buying a used positive pregnancy test to ‘trick’ her partner implies deep, emotional issues.

This isn’t a harmless white lie that can be easily covered up or swept under the carpet.

Biology dictates that after a few months one of three things has to happen.

Either the “pregnant” woman begins to show, she has a fake abortion or a fake miscarriage.

None of these options are decisions taken lightly by anyone so to commit to faking any one of them is unthinkable.

And yet positive pregnancy tests are available in nearly every US state listing on Craigslist, which implies that there is a market.

What kind of people would resort to such a course of action?

For one Craigslist user, whose post was entitled “I need positive pregnancy test or urine”, her motive was revenge against her cheating partner, who had got his secretary pregnant.

“I was with my ex for 5 year and 2 children. We had been trying to another and he came home last night and said out of all things [sic] his receptionist he got pregnant. He had been cheating on me for the last 6 mths.

“I think I handled it well for what a cheating lying dog he is. I am done with him an [sic] angry and don’t want him back but would like the last laugh out of this. I will give some girl $40.”

One reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, knew a woman in her mid-20s who told her friends and family she was pregnant and bought a fake 12 week scan from eBay to back up her story.

“After her boyfriend dumped her, Sabrina* told him and everyone else that she was pregnant.

“By this point, a few of us were concerned about her tendency to bend the truth so we were all suspicious when she announced her news.

“When she produced her 12-week scan at just eight weeks, alarm bells started going off.

“Her ex paid for her to have a private abortion, which she came home from laughing and dancing, another warning that she could have made the whole thing up.

“She didn’t get back together with her boyfriend but I think she did the whole thing for attention – from him, her friends, everyone.

“The more I think about it, the sadder it seems – it’s extreme attention seeking behaviour that isn’t a joke, it’s people’s lives.”

Are these Craigslist pregnancy tests a harmless joke or a more sinister threat?
