Emma Watson Gives Sage Life Advice on Twitter

The 24-year-old UN Ambassador fielded questions from millions of followers about the #HeForShe movement

Emma Watson hosted a Q&A on her Twitter feed and ended up dishing out some pretty awesome words of wisdom about feminism, equality and women in the 21st century.

The 24-year-old was in Davos for the #HeForShe campaign for gender equality she fronts with the UN and took the opportunity to take some questions from her 16 million followers.

Former Harry Potter star Emma didn’t shy away from addressing tough issues like women in the workplace or gender definitions as she fielded questions from around the world.

And in between questions about the aims of the #HeForShe movement, the British star gave some sage life advice to women struggling with the reality of gender inequality today.

One young fan told Emma about her father, who claimed she couldn’t do a job because she was a girl. Emma’s answer was simple:

@lordvoldemot @HeforShe Become an engineer.

Women today are often derided for ‘wanting to have it all’ – the successful career and fulfilling home life – with many of us scorned for choosing one over the other. Emma has some thoughts about that too:

@TheWyfeOfBathe Why not have both?

And don’t even get Emma started on women who describe themselves as anti-feminist…

@ohgryffindor I don't know its confusing isn't it!

One Twitter user pointed out that while admirable, the slogan #HeForShe was inherently restrictive and excluded gender-neutral individuals. Emma addressed the issue with grace and sensitivity:

@grygiel I don't believe in a binary I believe that we all exist on a spectrum and all deserve equality.I hope people do feel included.

Emma also had some practical advice for those wanting to get involved with the movement on a day-to-day basis: “Keep your eyes and ears open and speak up”.

The #HeForShe movement is calling for men to take up the fight for gender equality and was launched by Emma during an impassioned speech at the UN in September 2014.

Stars including Tom Hiddleston, Harry Styles and Eddie Redmayne have all shown their support for the cause.
