Model Chrissy Teigan sparked the Instagram trend with a picture of her own stretch marks

Chrissy Teigen has long been an absolute fave of ours here at Yahoo Lifestyle.

The model and food blogger spends her days either posting pictures of mouthwatering dishes she cooks with husband John Legend or dishing out some of the sassiest one-liners we've ever heard on Twitter.

Three days ago, the Sports Illustrated model posted a seemingly innocuous picture of her legs on Instagram with the caption: "Bruises from bumping kitchen drawer handles for a week. Stretchies say hi!"

Chrissy was inundated with comments from women thanking her for posting the picture and celebrating the fact that yes, all people get stretch marks - even lingerie models.

Her candid snap has sparked a new hashtag #LoveYourLines, with women all around the world sharing pictures of their own stretch marks and the stories behind them.

"Your body is not ruined. You are a tiger who has earned her stripes," reads one quote that has been doing the rounds on Instagram.

Many of these tigresses are mums who are deciding to proudly display the marks that they gained through pregnancy.

"I will wear these marks with pride and love because I thought I would never bring another life into the world!" writes user mama_richardson.

One user, mamakellbellz, shared a selfie taken just nine days after she gave birth to show what an actual human female body looks like after going through childbirth.

Stretch marks, called striae by doctors, are lines that appear on the skin as a result of either rapid weight loss or gain or growth spurts, like during puberty.

They usually start out red or purple and gradually fade to become silvery-white and are generally found on hips, thighs, bums, stomachs and breasts.
