Avoid Makeup Meltdown: Coachella Beauty Survival Tips

It’s April which means one thing in the USA. Coachella is finally here! Set in the heart of Palm Springs, Coachella is notorious not only for the amazing music and arts talent but also for the endless fashion parade amongst the festival goers.

With the sunny weather, you can rock any kind of festival fashion you want but one thing is for sure. The blistering heat of the Californian desert takes no prisoners when it comes to sticky limbs, limp hair and burnt bits, so being beauty-prepared is equally as important!

It doesn’t matter how achingly cool your new military ensemble is if your face is on serious red alert. Here are my top life lessons in dealing with the heat, beautifully.

By Zoe Dubs, facevaluebeautyblog.co.uk

First of all - lighten the load and get rid of your leather bag. A canvas bag is your new best bag friend in the heat. It’s light, it’s breathable and it doesn’t trap heat so you’re less likely to find a plasticy mess inside.

Inside the bag you need your SPF protection. It sounds boring and samey but it’s such a must for protecting your skin from burning and ageing. Do you want your neckline sagging to your knees?!

The problem with most SPF’s is that they feel sticky and horrid. I like the new La Roche Posay Anthelios Comfort Cream as it feels as light as a face cream and is not even noticeable once absorbed.

Dont forget to protect your hair too. I told you all about my purple hair transformation a while back - why invest in hair colour if you’re going to let it wither and fade?

I don’t know about you but I find that my hair gets absolutely frazzled when on holiday. It’s often the combination of salt and heat which dries out hair and makes it coarse.

Softness and protection are the key needs here. Hair oils create a barrier to reduce the amount of nasties getting into your hair – almost like leather cream on a sofa, it’s important to use them to reduce colour fade and frizz.

My favourites are the Lee Stafford Ubuntu Colour Fade Protection oil - it reacts with UV light to polymerase (fancy science word) into a protective layer. Oh, and it smells of strawberries too! Bumble and bumble specifically do a UV protection range and their Colorminded UV Protective Polish is super lightweight and really illuminates vibrant tones in your hair. Finally, the L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil is even lighter, but not quite as moisturising – better for those of you who already have soft locks and are just looking for the protection.

My next life lesson is all about the summer body cheats. I’m always keen to get a tan ASAP so that I don’t stand out in the crowd like a little Chinese white ghost but let’s face it - sunbathing is lovely but bathing in 35 degrees is fun for no more than five minutes.

Forget about frying yourself and fake the results, faster and without the damage. I’m no fake tan expert so this St Moriz Gradual Self Tan is ideal as it’s absolutely fool proof. The Vitamin E and Aloe Vera ingredients mean that it moisturises as it tans, so I’ll be doing this everyday to get my glow, whilst spending more time in the shade. Dont tell anyone!

The trick is to use it like body lotion, diluting it with other creams when applying around your knees. Apply a little bit everyday and build up the colour gradually for the most natural, non-orange, effect.

I’ll also be using the Along Came Betty Toning Cream from Tesco - a cellulite fighting cream which doesn’t break the bank! Obviously it’s not an exercise regime in a bottle but it’s great for giving you a little confidence boost when ready to bare it all! Apply it in place of your regular body lotion and see the difference in your skin texture after a few weeks.

Finally - I’ll be saving time NOT trying to master hippie-chic braids whilst recovering from the night before. The answer lies in a hair piece. No, i’m not talking about my secret toupe, hair pieces these days are getting more and more natural and wearable.

I’ll be wearing this Hot Hair Triple Twist Headband which takes a fraction of the time that braids do. Save your time for the actual festival!

This braided hairband comes in a huge range of colours and doesn’t involve faffing around with any clips or grips so you can put it on and look instantly polished, even if you aren’t feeling it….!
