Super Bowl 2015: Katy Perry’s Half-Time Performance Fashion Was Out Of This World

Four wardrobe changes, 22,000 crystals, seven pop songs and one famous designer came together for twelve minutes of fashion glory

The audience watching at home is bigger than the Oscars, so Katy Perry’s SuperBowl half-time performance was always going to be a big deal.

So who does the 30-year-old global megastar - real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson - employ to design her outfits? Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott, of course.

The pair worked closely to create four mind-blowing outfits for her to wear during her hugely anticipated 12-minute performance at the University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Opening the show in a flame-printed custom-made Jeremy Scott two-piece, the singer entered the stadium on a mechanical lion as she belted out ‘Roar’ - the first of seven songs to the millions watching at home.

Inspired by the flames on Adidas trainers designed by Jeremy himself, Katy’s crop-top and mini-skirt was styled with custom LaDuca booties, adorned with 12,600 Swarovski crystals, as she performed alongside musician Lenny Kravitz, 50.

And then in a blink-or-you’ll miss it wardrobe change, she revealed a super-sweet striped mini-skirt and beachball bra-top for her hit songs, ‘California Gurls’ and ‘Teenage Dream.’

The Moschino Creative Director revealed before her performance that her multi-coloured outfit was actually built to fit underneath her first look.

“We had to think about these looks like Russian Nesting Dolls. Four looks on one performer is really pushing it. So we had to figure out how the flame dress was going to evolve into the California Girls look,” Jeremy Scott told ELLE.

“So that suit was built to fit underneath her first look; we did one fitting just to make sure the bra and panty were smooth underneath.

“And in rehearsal, we had to get the transition—taking off the flames, putting on the overskirt—to ten seconds. Ten seconds to remove a piece of leather is hard!”

Performing alongside rapper Missy Elliot, 43, Katy then donned a bejewelled football jersey – a nod to Moschino’s American football inspired pre-Fall 2014 collection.

Emblazoned with the number ‘49’ to pay homage to the 49th SuperBowl game at which she was performing, Jeremy admitted this was actually one of the most difficult outfits to come up with.

He explained that once he found out that Katy would be performing ‘Get Ur Freak On’ alongside Missy Elliot, she would need something a little edgier to wear.

"Ironically, this look was the hardest to make. It's also the last one we imagined, because once we found out Missy Elliott was going to be performing with her, I was like, 'Katy, you cannot be singing 'Get Your Freak On' in a giant beach ball bikini! We need to step it up’,” he told ELLE.

“So we referenced Missy's tracksuits and came up with this dress. But in rehearsal, it was never oversize enough—when Katy was doing choreography, it would stay up on her hips after she threw her arms up in the air, and it wouldn't slide back down.

“But then we couldn't make it too big, because then it's not a cute dress, it's like pajamas!”

But it was the Grammy-award winner’s fourth and final SuperBowl look that really took centre-stage as she sported a show-stopping, custom-made Moschino dress covered with stars.

Her silver, one-shouldered Moschino dress for her ‘Fireworks’ performance was red-carpet worthy and she upped the bling by wearing it with 20-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings.

The funny thing is, she wasn’t even supposed to have four outfit changes – she was originally only supposed to have three.

“I don’t think anyone has taken on four costume changes for a Super Bowl performance ever,” Jeremy Scott told WWD.

“I really have to give it to Katy for rising to the occasion. We were originally only going to do three and I actually encouraged her to do a fourth.”

Overall, she wore a whopping 22,000 crystals over the twelve minutes, emblazoned on her outfits, accessories, shoes AND microphones.

Well, she was being watched by 110 MILLION fans in 180 countries – you gotta up the glam factor, right?
