Oscars 2014: Lupita Nyong'o's Prada princess dress is best on red carpet

The 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress steals the show in custom-made Prada gown

Not only did she walk away with the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars 2014, but Lupita Nyong'o also bagged the award for most striking outfit of the night.

The 31-year-old star of 12 Years a Slave made waves when she stepped out of her car into the damp Hollywood night in a beautiful sky blue gown, in stark contrast to many of the other, rather safer, Oscar dresses chosen by the stars.

Lupita explained on the red carpet that the dress was a custom-made Prada number, which she helped create with the help of her stylist Micaela Erlanger.

The dress featured an incredible plunging neckline, which few could pull off, and a pleated full skirt, which she held like a ballerina as she headed up onto the stage to accept her award.

She said: "I wanted to wear blue because blue reminds me of Nairobi." And added that the skirt's glittering details were to represent Champagne bubbles.

Lupita may have managed to create not only a custom dress but a custom colour as #nairobiblue spread through Twitter.

A fan of nail art, Lupita also showed off matching nails on the manicam and paired her dress with a cute gold and diamond headband, which will presumably single-handedly bring the Alice band back into fashion.

To contrast with the pretty dress, Lupita went for some edgy earrings and a gold bangle, both by Fred Leighton.

Lupita's striking look was in contrast to many of the nude and black dresses seen on the red carpet. Check out the best looks in our Oscar's 2014 gallery.
