Independent Spirit Awards 2015: It’s Patterns Aplenty On The Red Carpet

On the eve of the Oscars 2015, Julianne Moore, Olivia Munn and Aubrey Plaza opted for bold, colourful dresses. But will the trend continue at the Academy Awards?

It’s the day before the Oscars, you’re nominated for the Best Actress award and you’ve got a LOT of getting ready to do. You’d be holed up in your apartment, lathering on the fake tan, right?

Wrong. Julianne Moore and a host of Oscar-nominated A-Listers walked the red carpet for the Independent Spirit Awards 2015 in Santa Monica yesterday, 24 hours before the biggest night of their careers – the Academy Awards!

The 54-year-old flame-haired actress not only took home the award for Best Female Lead at the awards celebrating independent films but she nabbed the Best Dressed gong from us too.

The ‘Still Alice’ star looked ready for spring in her Christian Dior Spring 2015 Couture halter-neck dress, which featured 3D embellishment and sheer panels.

Julianne’s strappy platform heels, poker-straight locks and fresh, flawless make-up gave the couture gown a youthful twist that she pulled off perfectly.

But she wasn’t the only attendee to go bold and colourful on the red carpet as Aubrey Plaza, Olivia Munn and Marion Cotillard also went for patterns aplenty.

‘Parks And Recreation’ star Aubrey Plaza looked world’s away from her character April, wearing a high-necked Suno dress with ankle-strap heels and a loose up-do.

While ‘The Newsroom’ actress Olivia Munn showed off her taut tum in a cut-out Prabal Gurung gown that featured a sequinned top half and a pleated skirt in a dreamy coral shade.

Marion Cotillard, who narrowly avoided missing the ceremony after jetting in from Paris following the Cesar Awards, also went for bold patterns, wearing a Valentino maxi skirt with black sweatshirt.

To be honest, we’re not completely sold on the outfit combo but her skirt (as well as her hair and make-up) looked divine, so we’ll forgive her for the dodgy styling.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Cate Blanchett and Emmy Rossum led the stars rocking pretty embellishments for spring, wearing Schiaparelli Couture and Oscar de la Renta, respectively.

Red-carpet veteran Cate, 45, looked exquisite in her blue midi dress with 3D heart detailing while Emmy teamed her ditsy-floral frock with a complementary pink lip, which we loved.

However not all the stars made such bold sartorial choices with the likes of Emma Stone and Kerry Washington opting for classic black, even if they were both wearing spin-offs of the classic LBD.

‘Scandal’ actress Kerry flattered her post-baby body in a Balenciaga pencil dress with intricate neck detailing, while ‘Birdman’ star Emma kept things simple in a Monique Lhuillier dress, as did Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Chastain.

With the Oscars ceremony fast-approaching, it’s nice to see the nominees going for something a little out of their comfort zone as the Academy Awards are, of course, a place for more traditional red-carpet gowns.

Let’s hope Julianne and co give us something to get excited about tonight!
