How To Work The Floral Trend For SS14 Without Looking Like A Carnation

As the Chelsea Flower Show kicks off this weekend, avoid having a floral faux pas with our tips on how to work the trend into your wardrobe

The floral trend comes back into fashion every season, but with the Chelsea Flower Show kicking off this weekend, there’s no better time to brighten up your wardrobe with botanics.

We spoke to fashion experts about how to rock the trend for SS14 - without looking like a carnation.

“Florals, if they aren’t already, should be your spring/summer staple. You can select a multitude of shades, whether tropical or pastel, to suit absolutely any skin tone or hair colour,” says Gemma Cartwright, POPSUGAR Fashion and Beauty Editor.

Designer inspiration

Designers including Dolce and Gabbana, Mary Katrantzou and Erdem all showcased floral prints on their SS14 runways, updating the look with new, modern prints.

“This season's incarnation of the floral trend is fresh and exciting,” says Jakki Pay, Womenswear Design Director for House of Fraser.

“Illustrations and deconstructed prints are married with 3D appliqué and detailed embroidery for a modern, sophisticated take on a classic look with an edgy finish.”

Fancy florals

There are different types of prints to suit every style, including 3D, graphic-print and ditsy florals.

“Experiment with bold prints or delicate hits and find a look that’s right for you and your personality,” says Gemma.

“If your character is big, go bold in colour and shape! If you’re a bit of a wallflower (excuse the pun), something demure and feminine will probably suit you more. “

She reckons fair-skinned ladies should opt for pastel florals while those with darker skins can go for bold prints.

“As a general rule, the darker the skin and hair the bolder you can go. If you’re very fair, try toning it down,” she tells us.

How to style

Some of the key trends we’re seeing for SS14 include bomber jackets, pastel lace and two-pieces. These are all looks that the floral trend can be incorporated into with ease.

“Maxi skirts look gorgeous in florals as do bomber jackets for cool summer evenings,” says Gemma.

“For a more daring print look, two piece sets are super trendy at the moment and look great in floral print.”
