Golden Globes 2015 Dresses: The 7 Key Fashion Trends On The Red Carpet

From shimmering metallics to the Grecian goddess look and ruching detail, we’ve rounded up the trends you need to know about from last night’s Golden Globe Awards in LA

Awards season 2015 has officially kicked off following last night’s Golden Globes in LA.

The glittering ceremony saw TV and movie stars descend onto Hollywood and all eyes were on what the stars were wearing beforehand.

Here are the top trends on the Golden Globes 2015 red carpet…

1) Metallic Moment

Julianne Moore led the glittering metallic trend in a silver Givenchy Haute Couture gown which featured a feathered hem, while ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ actress Dakota Johnson rocked a similar style, wearing sequinned Chanel Haute Couture with thigh-high split.

Diane Kruger and Reese Witherspoon also opted for metallic but went for a more subdued take on the trend. Reese stunned in a strapless silver custom Calvin Klein Collection dress (which she revealed took 80 hours to make!) while German actress Diane opted for a demure, high-necked Emilia Wickstead number.

2) Ruling In Red

‘Girls’ actresses Lena Dunham and Allison Williams both led the red dresses trend although they interpreted it in very different ways. Lena donned an oversized satin Zac Posen dress with matching red heels, while Allison went down the Old Hollywood route wearing sparkling Armani Prive with retro, over-the shoulder waves.

Helen Mirren and ‘Orange Is The New Black’ actress Taylor Schilling both oozed sophistication in pillar-block red. Helen’s Dolce and Gabbana frock hugged her enviable curves while Taylor’s halter-neck Ralph Lauren dress was a more unusual shape compared to others we saw on the red carpet.

3) Grecian Goddess

It may still be winter but some of the stars looked ahead to SS15 for their outfit inspiration. Emily Blunt impressed the fashion critics in her Grecian-inspired Michael Kors dress, which she teamed with an ethereal up-do, as Julia Louis-Dreyfus trumped in Narciso Rodriguez.

Red carpet newbie Amal Clooney also channelled Grecian vibes in one-shouldered Christian Dior with full-length cape and Amy Adams was our best dressed of the night in cornflower blue Atelier Versace with mini, ruffled cape.

4) Mellow Yellow

Naomi Watts and Leslie Mann were among the stars to bring the sunshine to drizzly Beverly Hills last night. ‘The Impossible’ star Naomi looked incredible in a figure-hugging Gucci dress which she teamed with a diamond necklace, while Judd Apatow’s wife Leslie Mann stole the spotlight from her husband in her show-stopping Kaufmanfranco gown.

Meanwhile Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann opted for more muted shades of yellow, with Jenna looking uncharacteristically sophisticated in a floaty Carolina Herrera dress as Elettra donned a similar mellow hue (albeit with a more plunging neckline).

5) Belt Up

It’s not something we typically see on a red carpet, but prominent belts actually took centre-stage at the Globes last night. Kate Mara’s buckled belt was the focal point of her Miu Miu dress and Conchita Wurst styled her bottle-green outfit around her military-inspired belt.

Salma Hayek’s metallic belt cinched in her waist which made her look positively statuesque in Alexander McQueen and Emma Stone’s side-bow belt added intrigue to her monochrome Lanvin jumpsuit.

6) Ruching Detail

Catherine Zeta-Jones led the stars wearing dresses with ruching detail as she posed in strapless Angel Sanchez and Heidi Klum showed off her supermodel figure in plunging Versace with ruching to the waist.

But Katie Holmes and Jessica Chastain proved how styling can make or break an outfit.  Jessica looked like she was dripping in liquid gold in boob-baring Atelier Versace, which she teamed with tumbling waves and vampy black nails.  Katie Holmes on the other hand completely faded into the background in a purple Marchesa dress, which she wore with a side ponytail. A diamond necklace or statement earrings would have amped up this lacklustre look.

7) High-Necks

There were plenty of stars rocking plunging necklines but it was the high and halter-necks which really caught our eye last night. The show’s Co-host Amy Poehler stood out in a high-necked, cobalt blue Stella McCartney dress and ‘The Theory of Everything’ star Felicity Jones looked almost regal in her teal Christian Dior dress.

Anna Faris and Chrissy Teigen both opted for high-neck dresses in shimmering nude shades, with Chris Pratt’s wife Anna rocking Reem Acra and John Legend’s wife Chrissy oozing sex appeal in embellished Zuhair Murad.
