How To: Do Day Of The Dead Nail Art
Mexico's answer to Halloween is far more colourful that our standard spookiness, so we've borrowed some ideas from their celebration and found out how to make skull-tastic nail art
Halloween’s all well and good but the most visual, colourful and fun ghostly goings on at this time of year has to be the Mexican tradition of Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead).
In Mexico, family and ancestors who’ve passed away are celebrated with altars covered in orange marigold flowers and dotted with tiny replicas of the deceased's favourite things. (And there are a lot of mini Corona bottles as you can imagine!)
One of the most famous images of Dia de los Muertos is the colourfully decorated sculls made out of sugar. To recreate them on the fingers, we headed to Pinterest’s Day of the Dead styling event to find out how WAH Nails do it.
They showed us a variety of spooky ideas (below) but really we had to go for the classic skull.
And if you want to too, here are the steps:
1. File and buff nails, then apply a clear base coat
.
2. Paint the nail you want to do the skull on white and choose a colour for the other nails - of it you're really keen you can do the lot as skulls.
3. Start with teeth: Using a black nail art pen, draw a straight line near the edge of the nail, right across the width, then add the scalloped teeth
4. Use fimo 3D flowers for the eyes and stick gem in centre
for the pupils.
5. Finally, be creative! Add beads, swirls, dots and lots of colours with a nail art pen
6. Seal the whole thing, flowers and all, with top coat
