Stella McCartney announced plans this week to launch her own optical eyewear range following on from her uber-successful sunglasses line.
Her decision makes her the latest fashion designer to expand her business into spectacles, after Victoria Beckham did the same just a few months ago.
Spectacles have been making quite a fashion statement recently and are fast becoming a must have trend to up your style stakes.
Over half of the population wear prescription glasses, with high-profile designers taking on the challenge of making glasses chic as part of their high fashion collections.
From horn-rimmed, fifties-style wonders to classically elegant and timeless rectangular frames, glasses have been given a makeover and are now on the top accessory edit for the season.
Both Celine and Yves Saint Laurent have gone back to the fifties with their lot, taking on the Buddy Holly style thick black frames.
With miniature embellishments on the arms, these glasses are perfect for achieving that geek chic preppy look. To work this pair, embrace a beehive hairdo and then accentuate those peepers with lashings of liquid eyeliner.
Tom Ford is renowned for creating modern minimalism with his luxury accessories, however Ford’s glasses are large, rounded and tortoiseshell in colour, pushing the boundaries of the labels signature style.
As a rule, the wide frames suit a slimmer, oval shaped face to make more of a statement.
Faded rims were spotted at the shows last September and have been quickly replicated by every high-street retailer.

Carven and Victoria Beckham (yet another constant favourite when it comes to accessories) have released faded or dappled style glasses that soften the face and don’t look as harsh and dark as the traditional black rims.
These feminine glasses work best with a demure yet sexy pencil dress (another classic style of Victoria Beckham) or a flirty blouse (Carven’s forte) for this season.
Balenciaga is not usually a design house that favours simplicity. Their rock chick style and incredibly detailed embellishment has made them a household name, yet when it comes to the hottest glasses of the season, Balenciaga has won us over with a chic pair of minimalist frames.
The one piece build of these glasses is quite unique and would compliment any face shape, as the angular structure sits lightly on the cheekbones without weighing the face down.
Be warned, that these high fashion buys do come with high fashion price tags with the frames retail prices starting at £140 up to £350 excluding the cost prescription lenses.
