Beauty how-to: Colour pop make-up trend

SS13 is all about statement lips, colourful eyes, a wash of colour on the cheeks and bright nails – just not all at once. Here’s how to work the trend

Summer is the perfect time to add a pop of colour to your make-up look.

Statement lips, bright eyes, neon nails and flushed cheeks were seen all over the SS13 runways, but here’s how you can work the colour pop beauty trend at home.

Lips

The easiest way to brighten up your summer make-up look is to start with your lips.

To ease your way into the trend, invest in a sheer chubby stick that adds a wash of colour without being too harsh.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Lovesick is a great product to start with as it’s a bright, fuchsia pink shade but it’s buildable depending on the intensity of the colour you want.

A good tip to remember is to always prime your lips before applying any product. Firstly, use a lip scrub to rub off any dry, flaky skin and then apply a lip balm so they’re fully moisturised.

If you’re using a colourful lipstick, for example MAC Lipstick in Morange, it’s best to line lips with a nude pencil first to avoid any of the colour spilling out onto skin.

Afraid of orange? There’s a red lipstick to suit every skin colour so swatch your favourite shades on your jawline in your favourite drugstore and find the one that looks most flattering.

Cheeks

If you’re after a more subtle pop of colour, cream blush is a quick and easy way to brighten up your summer make-up routine.

The great thing about cream blusher is it can be applied straight from the pot with your fingers. Simply add a little to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards to your jawline.

When you’re applying cream blusher – or blusher in general – just smile and apply it to the plump part of your cheeks.

If you’re not sure what product to buy, pinch your cheeks and the flushed colour is the perfect blusher shade for you.

Revlon Photoready Cream Blush in Flushed may look bright in the pot, but it blends out to a lovely pink shade that’s flattering for all skin types.

Eyes

Bright blue eyeshadow was a big hit on the Topshop SS13 at London Fashion Week – and high street brands have been quick off the mark to launch similar products nationwide.

Maybelline 24Hr Color Tattoo in Turquoise Forever is one of our favourite products as it’s bright, highly pigmented and most importantly, long-lasting.

Don’t forget to use an eyeshadow primer first so that the colour ‘sticks’ to your lid, before applying eyeliner and mascara on top.

If you’re really daring, you could try a bright colour like MUA Eyeshadow in Shade 5 which is a stunning, tropical green hue.

Just make sure to keep the rest of your make-up simple to avoid a beauty faux pas – bright lips and eyes are a big no-no.

Nails

We’re obsessed with bright nail colours here in the office as it can lift your mood instantly.

Coral-coloured nail polishes are bang on-trend for summer and are perfect for holidays abroad.

But this year, our talons are painted in Models Own Neon Nail Polish in Luis Lemon which is a bright, fluro acid yellow.

If these shades are too much for you, paint them on your toes where they’re more hidden – but will still brighten your day.
