Barmy Baby Names 2014: Crazy Names Given To Scottish Children Last Year

Although Jack and Emily, two very traditional names, were the most common baby names in Scotland in 2014, there was also a whole host of completely bizarre choices.

We’re talking everything from singular letters to Godly names. There was no holding back.

There were boys called R and T and two children called A and a handful of other children given two-letter names such as Yi and Zi.

Among the out-there girls names were Hiya, Lullaby, Peace, Precious, Twinkle, Thirteena-Starr and Velvet.

And the boys didn’t get off much better. Atlas, Diesel, Elvis, Mate, Sherlock, Thor, Spartacus and Steel were just some of the unusual names dished out.

The records, revealed by the National Records of Scotland, also showed that the Game of Thrones continues to inspire parents as three baby girls were named Khaleesi.

And the effect of Disney’s Frozen is still going strong as 31 girls were named Elsa, 28 were named Anna and eight boys were named Olaf.

It looks like the independence referendum may also have had an influence as out of the 56,725 births in Scotland last year two children were named Freedom and three were called Indy.

And there were plenty of celebrity baby names dished out across Scotland.

One girl was called Apple, the name of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter, and a baby boy was named Bear – the name picked out by Kate Winslet for her son.

Princess, the name of Katie Price and Peter Andre’s second child, was given to one girl and another parent pre-empted Liv Tyler’s baby name choice and called their tot Sailor.
