Ashton Kutcher Campaigning For Baby Change Facilities In Men’s Public Toilets – Another Win For Parenting Equality

Let’s hear it for Ashton. The actor is fighting for fair rights for dads and wants more men’s public toilets to have baby change facilities

We all know that parenting is no longer the mum’s remit. Today, more dads than ever are staying at home to raise their tot and fathers in general are more hands-on with the parenting duties than ever before.

Even Simon Cowell, who once insisted he never would, changes nappies.

So we’re in big support of Ashton Kutcher’s latest campaign – to make sure all, or at least more, men’s toilets have baby changing facilities.

There are changing tables in pretty much every women’s toilet, so why not, in this day and age, are they not in men’s loos, too? OK, so they often crop up in ‘family’ bathrooms or the disabled toilet but those facilities are not always available.

Dads take their nappy-clad children out and about sans mum, so it stands to reason that they need a place to freshen their tot up.

Ashton, who welcomed his first child with Mila Kunis five months ago, recently tweeted his frustration at being unable to change his baby daughter’s nappy in public and has done something about it.

The 37-year-old actor has teamed up with Change.org to ask US retailers Target and Costco to “provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores.”

Ashton has shared the petition on his Facebook page and has so far had over 85,000 signatures.

“It seems this idea of diaper changing stations has struck a chord. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people just complain about s**t and don’t do anything to improve their condition. So lets do something. In for equality? Pass it on - #LeanInTogether (sic),” the dad-of-one wrote.

Explaining his decision to pick out mega American stores Target and Costco, Ashton wrote, “Target and Costco have proven themselves time and time again to be companies that honour diversity, support families, and provide great services to kids of all ages.

"That is why I am calling on them to be the change. As leaders in their industry, they can initiate a company-wide policy to provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores.

“If Target and Costco take this step, I know that other companies will follow suit and recognise that we should be supporting all parents equally.”

Despite his best efforts, it appears that Ashton didn’t do his research first though as Target responded to the petition explaining that they have had changing tables in both their men’s and women’s toilets for over 25 years. “In addition, as we build new stores, we place changing tables in our women's, men's and family restrooms.

“In the event a changing table is unavailable, we encourage our guests to notify a team member and we will be happy to offer an alternative private location to meet their needs," a representative for the brand said.
