The giant egg weighing one kilogram beat luxury offerings from specialist chocolate brands Fortnam & Mason and Hotel Chocolat.

Chocolate connoisseurs from the Good Housekeeping Research Institute tasted 190 chocolate eggs ranging in price from £1.99 to £26 to find the best options in four categories, and named ‘The Collection Giant Belgian Chocolate Easter Egg’ as the best overall.

The £10 Easter egg from Asda impressed judges with its “thick, rich, delicious chocolate” taste, it was credited for being great value for money and a perfect size for sharing awarding it with an overall score of 79 out of 100.

Fortnum & Mason’s Eggsploding Egg at £25 was only worthy of 54 points and Hotel Chocolat’s luxury Eggsibitionist which costs £26 scored a mark of 62.

Good Housekeeping Consumer Editor Caroline Bloor said: “We think the Asda egg is a deserving winner, proving that a cheaper egg can not only taste delicious but is excellent overall value.

“The variety of Easter eggs available in 2012 is fantastic but spending more does not guarantee good value or great taste.”

Other winning favourites included eggs from rival supermarket stores Tesco and Marks and Spencer. The ‘made for sharing’ category was won by last year’s overall winner, Tesco’s £15 Finest Ultimate Belgian Milk Chocolate Egg, scoring 78.

The Institute said: “The very attractive design and elegant packaging and 30 chocolates was more than enough to secure the judges votes.”

The prize for best egg for adults went to Marks and Spencer’s £15 Luxury Egg Nest with a score of 63. The experts concluded: “With its distinctive bubble-wrap chocolate decoration, this egg would make a lovely gift. Smooth and creamy, it had a good mix of milk and dark chocolate.”

While the ultimate Easter treat for girls was the £4.99 Nestle Milkybarn Cow and Egg, scoring 76 for its “very milky and rich white chocolate “and for boys the £5 Chokablok Billionaires Dynamite Egg was praised for its “crunchy biscuit, chewy toffee and yummy fudge pieces”.
