A Suit That Fits Review: Can Online Bespoke Wedding Suit Services Really Measure Up To The High Street?

In the words of Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love, nothing makes a man less attractive than when he’s “wearing a 44 Long when you should be wearing a 42 Regular".

Some men are born with a gift for suit shopping, others not so much…

So when it came to finding my now husband, who often needs a little ‘guidance’ when it comes to shopping, a suit for our wedding, panic set in.

After several visits to the usual high street riff raff (we were on a tight budget), I sent a mutual male friend in his direction to sort him out.

Thankfully, this is what happened….



There are certain subjects in life that men are just supposed to know.

Motorbikes, rugby, cars and any form of DIY are just some of the topics I have pretended to understand when surrounded by the kind of males who are seemingly born with an encyclopedic knowledge of Allen bolts and scrum halves.

And generally, by using the odd grunt and a solid internal database of man clichés, I can hold my own.

However, there is one area of ‘man knowledge’ in which I always tend to come up short - buying a new suit [ *cough* any item of clothing].



For years I have wandered aimlessly around generic high street stores trying on off-the-rack jackets and trousers handed to me by snappily-dressed shop assistants who are all too willing to assure me that what ever size I'm wearing is a perfect fit.

But when I get it home and see my fiancee looking at me with her 'Oh, LEE' eyes, I can’t help but feel more David Brent than David Gandy.

Years ago I vowed to myself that this embarrassing ordeal would finally end on my wedding day, with such a special occasion finally meriting a financial splurge on a fancy bespoke suit.

As our Big Day drew near earlier this summer, I fell victim to the 'it'll be fine' mindset and left all my suit research until the last minute, leaving me stunned by High Street prices, which, when added to the escalating wedding expenses, meant my dream of a tailored suit was to stay just that.



That was until I struck up a conversation with one of the aforementioned males who knew his man topics – especially, apparently, when it comes to suits.

When I told him about my dilemma he pointed me in the direction of A Suit That Fits.

The company offer low-cost high quality bespoke and tailored suits at High Street prices, allowing customers to design their own online or, as in my case, to visit one of their studios to be measured up.

The business is the brainchild of Warren Bennett and David Hathiramani, who both came up with the idea after realising the cost and quality of suits Warren found while travelling in Nepal were not available in the UK.

Their business model was simple; a customer’s measurements are sent over to Nepal where an experienced tailor creates a custom-made suit within two months. When it gets to the UK, it's then especially tailored even further to fit the buyer perfectly.

And instead of the usual £800 and upwards price tag for standard size High Street suits, their fully bespoke pieces start at as little as £289.



The company also ensures all of its tailors are given an ethical payment, while also donating a proportion of the profits to a local school in Nepal.

So far, so good.

However, as great as this seeminlgy-mystical ethical deal seemed, I was still rather overwhelmed at the thought of designing my own suit, with visions of mismatched piping and linings sparking another 'Oh, LEE' look.

When I initially looked online I was blown away by the huge array of options in front of me, from patterned linings (I could get my fiancee's face printed on the inside of my jacket if I wanted to...) to bespoke peaks, cuffs, cuts, buttons, lapel width (wtf?) and prints - the options were endless.

Being the simple man that I am, I felt I needed a little guidance and decided to make an appointment with one of the company’s expert style advisers in London.

Stopping by on my lunch hour, my style advisor took my measurements and talked me through each process, offering options for every tiny part of my two-piece suit.



Placing my order, I was told it would take about six weeks before the suit arrived in London, with a rush if necessary (it was necessary).

When the suit arrived just two weeks later, I genuinely was amazed at the quality (I definitely didn't have high expectations), and although it was a good fit, it definitely needed a few alterations, which is the second part of the process.

My style advisor guided me through which areas needed tucking in and letting out so I looked my best – sending my pinned suit downstairs to their onsite tailor to fiddle with.

Just two weeks and three fittings later - with the bride’s approval - I was left with a wedding suit fit for Gandy at a fraction of the price he probably pays for his bespoke buttons.

Job done.
