A Quarter Of Brits Would Ditch Booze For Biscuits

National Biscuit Day has a deep meaning for biccie-loving Brits, with many of us happy to ditch booze and Facebook so long as we can keep our crumby fix

Brits are good at Biscuits. Our Hobnobs trump Oreos any day of the week and it's clear our love for a good biccie is so great we need a whole day to celebrate them.

Today is said National Biscuit Day. But how important are biscuits to us? And more importantly, which is the national favourite?

It is the humble Chocolate Digestive, which is also the best dunker, according to our independent research.

Research by McVitie's (who, let's face it, have a vested interest) found that 21 per cent of us vote these our favourite biscuit followed by Jaffa Cakes, which top the list for 15 per cent. And let's not get into the biscuit vs cake discussion around JCs at this juncture.

Other biscuit facts we gleaned on this very important of days is that the average Brit eats two biscuits a day - which goes some way towards explaining the obesity crisis - and more than a quarter of us would choose biccies over booze.

A third would even ditch Facebook if given the ultimate choice between the addictive social media portal and the equally addictive crumbly snack.

But even more unexpectedly - a sixth of us would give up sex for biscuits.

And a phenomenal amount of biscuits are bought each year, with 99.2 per cent of households purchasing at least one pack.

When it comes to Hobnobs, men are bigger fans of the nobbly baked goods than women, and they only topped the faves list in the North West.

Science Communicator and researcher Dr Stuart Farrimond (BM BS BMedSci PGCE) commented: “The foods we eat have profound effects on our emotions as a result of how our brains are wired.

"When we taste or smell a food we enjoy, neurological signals are sent directly to the pleasure centres of the brain, influencing our mood and feelings.

“Previous research has shown that of all foods, biscuits and chocolate are among those that trigger the most pleasure and excitement.”

More than a third of us reckon eating biscuits make us happy.

But they also will make us fat. So go easy, guys.
