9 Of The Most Shocking Celebrity Hotel Scandals

Stripping off, roughing up your mum and getting frisky with fish: we round up the most infamous rock n roll moments

If you thought throwing a TV off the balcony of a hotel room was the height of hedonism, think again. Celebrity bad behaviour knows no bounds and any star serious about earning their rock n roll stripes should take pointers from this lot:

No self-respecting naughty celebrity list would be complete without bad gal Lindsay Lohan. The troubled Parent Trap star has been blacklisted from a number of luxury hotels, including LA’s Chateau Marmont, where she ran up room service charges of $46,590.62 (£29,000) following a two-month stay in 2012. Lohan was asked to remove her belongings from the suite after she failed to settle the bill. She also reportedly caused $50,000 worth of damage to her room at the W in New York, covering the carpet in cigarette burns.

The Dorchester doesn’t seem to have much luck with celebrity guests. In 2011, Nicki Minaj was asked to leave after hordes of her fans or “barbz” as she calls them, stormed the hotel, started fights with one another and writing graffiti on the inside one of the lifts. The Anaconda singer didn’t seem too embarrassed by the incident and took to Twitter to say she hoped the next hotel she stayed at would be nicer.

Jump around

Wild child Miley Cyrus can always be relied on to cause a stir, and during a recent stay at the Greenwich Hotel in NYC, the former Disney actress got literal with her Wrecking Ball lyrics. After a night on the town, Cyrus and her posse returned to the hotel and proceeded to jump up and down on the lobby furniture, hurling expletives at shocked staff and guests. When asked by the manager to tone it down, she reportedly said she spent enough cash there to do as she pleased.

Explosive behaviour

Keith Moon could teach these young starlets a thing or two about bad behaviour. Turning trashing hotel rooms into an art, the late drummer of The Who was particularly adept at flushing explosives down toilets. But it was his 1967 birthday bash at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan that earned him real rock star kudos. His revelry involved starting a food fight, setting off fire extinguishers, destroying a piano and driving a car into the swimming pool.

While these A-listers took the ‘work hard, play hard’ motto a little too far, some celebrities seem to think staying in a hotel gives them licence to act like downright thugs:

Bad boy Charlie Sheen took drunk and disorderly to a new level in 2010, when he trashed a suite in New York’s Plaza Hotel, following a booze and cocaine binge with a hired escort. Stripping down to his underwear, the rampaging Two and a Half men actor accused his date of stealing his wallet and mobile phone, and allegedly locked her in a closet. His publicist later said he’d had a bad reaction to some medication. Ahem.

The late king of pop Michael Jackson received worldwide condemnation after dangling his nine-month-old son off a balcony at Berlin’s Adlon Hotel in 2002, to show him off to the adoring fans below. Jackson later apologised, saying he “got caught up in the moment”.

Going Bale-istic

We all know Christian Bale has a foul temper (remember his expletive-laden tirade at the unfortunate DP who inadvertently stumbled on set during Terminator Salvation?) But in 2008, he upped it a notch by getting physical with his family. Staying at The Dorchester on the eve of The Dark Knight premiere, Bale is reported to have shoved his mother and sister after the latter asked him for a loan. The police were called and the A-list actor was arrested on suspicion of assault. According to his mum, they haven’t spoken since.

The notoriously bad-tempered Russell Crowe clearly took his training for The Gladiator to heart. In 2005, unable to find a sword or spear to hurl at a member of staff at the Mercer Hotel in NYC, he opted for a phone instead, leaving the man with facial lacerations. Apparently, the jet-lagged Crowe was upset at not being able to call his wife in Australia. He was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (the telephone) and settled an undisclosed amount with the concierge. The Aussie star later said it was “most shameful situation I’ve ever gotten myself into”.

Shark attack

Hell raisers Led Zeppelin not only rode their motorcyles through the lobbies of Chateau Marmont and the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard, manager Richard Cole is also believed to have defiled a groupie with pieces of shark (yes, the fish) at the Edgewater Inn in Seattle in 1969.
