7 Ways To Keep Your Baby Happy On A Flight

For such tiny humans, babies have a lot of baggage – and can make A LOT of noise. Which is why it’s worth packing a clever bag of tricks that are sure to keep your little one calm and entertained, while simultaneously avoiding the death stares from the other passengers.

Torn between jumping for joy at the thought of your holiday and dreading the idea of flying with a baby in tow? Completely normal as a new parent.

You’ve been that childless passenger before, driven to distraction by the sound of someone’s baby wailing his head off for eight hours. And now you’re that poor parent on the receiving end of some not-so-subtle glances and over exaggerated sighs.

But don’t panic – your flight CAN be a smooth ride.

Between packing some of your tot’s favourite toys, books and games (just as necessary in your hand luggage as baby wipes are) and utilising your own baby-entertaining know-how, both you and your bub will have a great flight with these expert tips.

1. Offer Distractions
Babies can get really upset by the sensation of their ears popping during take off and landing, but there are ways you can comfort your little one.

“Offering something to suck can really help,” says leading parenting expert Fi Star-Stone.

“Try either breastfeeding or give your baby a bottle. If you use a dummy, take a few spare ones incase one falls under the seat. It’s not easy to retrieve with a baby on your lap!”

A comforter or a favourite toy can also help calm your baby throughout the flight.

2. Read Books
A couple of your baby’s favourite books won't take up too much space in your handbag and are a great way to wile away some time with him.

Pack a mix of board, touch and feel and lift-the-flap books that he’ll love playing with and looking at.

3. Watch A Film
While screen time probably isn’t your normally go-to way to entertain your tot, it can be a lifesaver on a plane.

If you’re lucky enough to be on a flight with on-board entertainment, find a suitable film for your baby to watch or otherwise let him have a play around on your phone. He’ll think his birthday’s come early.

“Your baby will find the bright lights and colours of the children’s channels fascinating,” says Fi. “While I wouldn’t suggest much time in front of the TV at home, I think sometimes a little screen time on a long flight can actually be very helpful!”

4. Play With Your Baby
Don’t forget that you’re a one-woman entertainment machine, bursting with songs, funny faces and games that your baby will love.

“Singing nursery rhymes and playing peek-a-boo games may not make you the most popular passenger, but a crying and screaming baby is no fun for anyone on a long flight,” says Fi.

So sing and peek-a-boo away.

5. Take Toys
Pack a couple of small toys that your baby will love playing with. Include lots of sensory toys that he’ll love the feel of, such as teethers, mirrors and fabric fiddly toys.

Put them all in a drawstring bag and tie it to the arm of your chair for easy access. “This way it’s on hand during the flight,” says Fi. “With a baby on your knee, you need everything in grabbing distance.”

6. Have Snacks To Hand
If your baby’s weaned and used to finger foods, take a small selection of baby-safe snacks. “Pick out things that won’t make too much mess,” says Fi.

7. Go For Walks
Roam around the plane with your baby as much as you can – it will do you the world of good.

“It's not only good for you, but great for your baby, too,” says Fi. “Nobody likes being in one position for a long time.” And no matter how small your baby is, he’ll feel heavy after sitting on your lap for too long.” If it’s safe to do so, and the food trolley isn’t trundling down the aisle, let your baby have a quick crawl around to get rid of some energy.

If you’re travelling with a friend or your partner, take it turns to hold your baby so you can have a break from being the entertainer.
