Online dating tip 1: Smile for the camera

The key to getting a great date online is to upload a decent profile image. To do this, look to the right when taking the photo; this makes you look more attractive. To avoid the horrors of the double-chin shot, position the camera just above or at your eye level. You should also tilt your head up and extend your neck slightly out. You also need to be aware that not everyone will share your love of snakes or heavy metal. Choose an image that is relatively neutral and does not include pictures of your friends – there’s nothing worse than a potential date showing interest in you only to back down once you tell them that ‘no, you’re not your friend, you’re the girl on the right’. Finally, although it can be tempting to use a flattering shot of yourself from 1995, sadly when you meet up with your date they’re going to be a little disappointed. So be brave and be honest guys and girls.

Online dating tip 2: Don’t take it personally

Online dating is a complex art that is full of obstacles, disappointment and dead-ends. Unlike face-to-face dating, dating digitally is a far more casual business and you should expect people to drop conversations and stop messaging you as quickly as they began. Just because someone stops getting in contact does not mean that they don’t like you or that they won’t contact you again. The truth is you will never know why they didn’t pursue your relationship further. Try not to become upset though and instead remember that situations change and that the chances are, they weren’t put off by your wonky smile or flat nose, they just became busy, started seeing their ex again or simply chatted to so many people online you fell off their radar.

Online dating tip 3: Be casual

It’s surprisingly easy to seem like a stalker when you’re dabbling in online dating. What you thought was a carefully constructed message about who you are and what you’re looking for can come across to the person you send your message to as being creepy, demanding and dull. To avoid this stalker reputation, make your messages casual and specific to the person you’re writing to. Write things like, ‘Hi, I like your profile pic. You have a gorgeous smile’ or ‘Noticed you’re into R&B, I am too’. Writing short messages that mention points from the person’s profile will show you are attentive, keen and kind. Being able to give genuine compliments or write comments that make people laugh will also make you seem more attractive to the guy or girl you like.

Online dating tip 4: Target

When it comes to online dating more is definitely less and you should try not to fall into the trap of sending out hundreds of duped messages to a big batch of potentials. Firstly, the people you send these duped messages to will know that the message in their inbox is generic and most people won’t want to start anything with you. However, you will probably get one or two replies and those that do message back to generic messages like the one you mailed out will probably be desperate and you won’t want anything to do with them in a few weeks’ time. So target hopefuls and work on building genuine relationships with people who you are attracted to, have some shared interests with and who live relatively near to you. Then once you’ve messaged them for a few weeks and built a little trust ask them out. You can’t maintain a good relationship online for long and you need to know if this is going to go anywhere. If it isn’t, move on.

Online dating tip 5: Be honest

Some people use online dating for different reasons. Some are searching for love, for romance and for company, whilst others (we have to be blunt here) are simply looking for sex. If you are looking for someone to start a relationship with and are planning to meet up with someone drop hints that you aren’t going to have sex with them initially. You can tell them anecdotes about your “friends” who use this site as a way to get into bed with people and say how you don’t think that’s right, or that you wouldn’t do a thing like that. If you’re the person using the site to find people to sleep with, be honest and open. Don’t lead someone on and pretend you want more if in your head your date is going to be the first and last time you see this person. Your date will quickly know you only want sex and will be gone before you’ve even finished the sentence, ‘Do you want to come back to mine for …’. Read more on realbuzz.com...
