11 Brilliant Foods You Didn’t Know You Could Serve on a Stick

We all know about cake pops and kebabs, right? But what other foods could you serve on a stick? A fish and chip dinner? A cream tea? You betcha.

Mini doughnuts

Mini doughnuts - whether coated in cinnamon sugar, sticky icing or melted chocolate - are messy to eat. So slide them on a stick. Perfect for kids - and they can decorate their own doughnuts with chocolate or sprinkles, too. Also try this with doughnut holes, yumyums and mini doughnuts filled with jam.

Salad

Just slide salami slices, cold roasted chicken pieces, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and shredded lettuce onto skewers. A great idea for parties or barbecues, and you don’t need to worry about providing plates or knives and forks, which means less washing up, too. Hint: slide a piece of bread onto both ends and you’ve got a sandwich on a stick. Hurray!

Burgers

Here’s a great idea from the blog Picture the Recipe - Burgers on a Stick. A firm bread (they’ve used naan), is skewered on a stick, along with tiny beef burgers, bacon, cheese, cherry tomatoes and lettuce. It’s a great idea for barbecues or parties.

Pasta

You probably wouldn’t think of pasta as skewer material, but cooked tortellini are the perfect texture for it. We’ve combined spinach and ricotta tortellini with spinach and basil leaves and a cherry tomato at one end to keep it all in place. Drizzle with a little fresh pesto loosened with a drop of extra virgin olive oil before eating.

Fish and chip dinner

Yep. Even the great British fish and chip dinner can be served on a stick. Chunks of battered or breaded fish, a couple of chips, a small pea fritter and a gherkin. Keep the salt, vinegar and ketchup handy and you’ve got a trendy party snack. Or just a different way of enjoying one of the nation’s favourite takeaways.

Yoghurt

No, not straight out of the tub - it’d drip down the stick and never work. But frozen yoghurt works brilliantly served on a stick. It’s also really easy to make, with no churning in ice cream makers. Sam from the blog Sweet Remedy has this recipe for frozen yoghurt lollies flavoured with a blueberry and currant sauce.

Profiteroles

We all love profiteroles. They’re a British favourite but are sticky and messy to eat, usually topped with melted chocolate and filled with fluffy cream. Remove them from their carefully-stacked pyramid and spear them onto skewers before passing round. Dessert sorted.

Sausage

There’s a reason the corn dog is so popular in the US - it’s a tasty, portable snack. But we Brits can have our own versions of a sausage on a stick. Hot dog sausages with mustard or ketchup dip? Butcher’s sausages wrapped in streaky bacon? As well as solving the cutlery problem, it also works for barbecues where you have guests that don’t eat bread or gluten.

Cream tea

Wait. What’s this? A posh cream tea on a wooden stick? Well, yes. Just sandwich quarters of fruit scones with a smidge of clotted cream and spear fresh strawberries on top, for a cool new version of a traditional summer cream tea. Don’t forget to put the kettle on.

Bacon and egg breakfast

This is more of a trendy party nibble rather than something you’d do if you were really starving for breakfast, although it would be a brilliant idea for sleepovers. Quail’s eggs take just a couple of minutes to hard-boil and they’re just the right size for sliding onto a cocktail stick with a roasted cherry tomato, a piece of crisp, grilled streaky bacon and a pan-fried chestnut mushroom. A one-bite breakfast.

Jelly

No, I’m not messing with you. Food blogger Michelle, of the blog That’s So Michelle has come up with these Jelly Shots served on lollipop sticks. She’s made them with a watermelon theme, but you could use any flavours you like. Don’t they look lovely?
