‘Miracle’ Triplets Born TWO YEARS Apart – Thanks To Successful IVF

Despite being conceived at the same time, triplets Isabel and Arthur were born two years after their brother Ethan – from one IVF cycle

When Katie and Matthew Preston started IVF treatment a few years ago, they probably never expected to welcome triplets two years apart.

The family from Castle Vale, Birmingham, has hit the headlines after having Ethan at the end of 2012 and his triplet siblings Isabel and Arthur last December.

After learning they only had a one per cent chance of having children naturally, Katie and Matthew turned to IVF to conceive.

“We gave everything to it – it was our whole focus,” Katie told Birmingham Mail. “As a couple it can make or break you, and it can be very stressful at times. But the support I got from Matthew was amazing.”

They created six embryos and one was transferred into Katie’s uterus.

“I did a test secretly, and slightly early, which was negative so I really didn't think the treatment had worked,” Katie recalled. “On the actual test date I was shaking. When two lines appeared I sat daydreaming about what our future held.”

Ethan was born just before Christmas in 2012 and the couple decided what to do with the remaining frozen embryos.

“We just couldn’t discard them after the effort and dedication that went into creating them, so we decided to use them,” said Matthew.

Incredibly, all of the embryos survived the thaw and the two best were transferred to Katie. “To our surprise at our first pregnancy scan, we saw not one, but two little heartbeats!” she said.

Despite the time difference in when the three children were born, Katie says she and Matthew think of “their three little miracles” both as twins and a big brother and as triplets.

“At the moment Ethan is going through the terrible twos, and the babies are only three months old,” said Katie. “But I know when they are older they will all have a special bond as triplets.”
