'Kate Middleton could follow modern maternity fashion trend and wear her bump with pride'

As Duchess of Cambridge reveals her pregnancy, our body language expert predicts what Kate's maternity wardrobe will be like

Kate Middleton's pregnancy announcement sent shockwaves around the globe yesterday.

Just moments after St James' Palace revealed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were expecting a baby, Twitter was ablaze with talk of #royalbaby names and how Kate was coping.

The Duchess of Cambridge, whose carefully-selected style has seen her top dozens of best-dressed lists, will inevitably face heavy scrutiny from the world's press when it comes to her maternity wear.

Many have been asking if she'll cover up her bump with billowing frocks like the late Princess Diana, or if she'll chose the style route of many a modern celebrity mum and steer clear of typical maternity wear - instead opting for her usual labels in bigger sizes.

Judi James, a leading body language expert, reckons Kate will opt for the latter - and follow the modern trend and stick to her trademark style than has won over the fashion critics.

"The old idea of maternity clothes has gone out the window," she told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

"There used to be an embarrassment of looking pregnant - even with Princess Diana - but with Kate, the current trend is to wear their bump with pride.

"Fabrics are a lot softer and more flexible nowadays, so show off the bump. It would be great if Kate followed in this more fashionable way of showing off her pregnancy."

And while Kate's announcement yesterday comes after months of rumours surrounding whether she was pregnant, Judi says the 'normal rules' about body language don't apply when it comes to Kate.

"It's quite funny, because since before she got married she had a habit, an iconic pose, of covering her stomach with a clutch bag," she said.

"It's often a subliminal response to pregnancy, but it may be a defence barrier for Kate - who's been dealing with pregnancy rumours since she got married - because of people looking at her stomach."

Yet was there anything about Kate that could have given away her happy news?

"In a way, the difference with her was more to do with facial expression," Judi explained. "Her smile was different - it was like a secret smile."

And how Kate will dress during the months of her pregnancy comes down to how she's feeling, she believes.

"Considering all the pres speculation, you would understand if she feels under scrutiny and covers up her bump," Judi said.

"The most important thing is how she feels. She doesn't really follow any classic royal trends - she's been wearing high street fashion - but she looks great whatever she does.

"It would be a shame if she did cover up her bump though."

Considering Kate's latest stylish outings, Judi James could be right in thinking Kate will take a modern approach to maternity fashion.

At her last public appearance over the weekend, the Duchess wowed in a chic McQ by McQueen tartan trench coat as she visited St Andrew's school in Berkshire.

The navy-and-green creation proved she's bang-on-trend with the latest winter fashion craze, teaming her look with suede, heeled black knee-high boots.

Just a few days previous, the Duchess of Cambridge donned a MaxMara taupe coat for a trip to the Guildhall, which she teamed with a leopard-print dress and suede ankle boots.
