Why Bill Murray skipped the Emmys

On Sunday, Bill Murray won his first Emmy in over 30 years, for his supporting role in the HBO mini-series Olive Kitteridge. But the star wasn't on hand to collect the award himself, and fans were left wondering about his whereabouts on television's biggest night. It turns out that Bill had a very good reason for skipping the ceremony – he was attending his son's wedding in Philadelphia.

Luke Murray, an assistant basketball coach at Xavier University in Ohio, married Kara Cassidy on Sunday – and the groom's proud father was there to join in the celebrations. Bill's presence at the wedding was confirmed by his long-time friend Kelly Lynch, who shared a photo of the star at the nuptials, along with the caption: "Another reason I <3 #BillMurray – he wins an #Emmy but is at his son's wedding #priorities."

At the ceremony, two of Bill's brothers, actor Joel Murray and comedian Brian Doyle-Murray, posed for a picture with their nephew Luke, along with Saturday Night Live writer Jim Downey.

According to another Instagram post by one of the members of the live band that played at the reception, Bill also got up on the stage and performed with them. A photo shows the star posing alongside the excited musicians, along with the caption: "Bill Murray jumped on stage and rocked out with us…"

Luke is Bill's second child from his first marriage to Margaret Kelly – the couple tied the knot in 1981, and welcomed two sons, Homer and Luke, before their divorce in 1996.

Bill – who celebrated his 65th birthday on Monday - married Jennifer Butler in 1997, and together they have four sons, Caleb, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln. The couple ended their marriage in 2008.
