How to wear one dress five ways

I'm a huge fan of casual day dresses but sometimes it's easy to get stuck in a rut and wear the same piece just one way. Savvy recessionistas should make their existing clothes work overtime when they need to stay stylish on a tight budget. A cute day dress is likely to quickly become a wardrobe favourite thanks to its simplicity. Switch up your shoes and accessories and get clever with layering to reinvent your favourite tea dress.

    Sharpen up

Sure, a printed dress is perfect for casual days, but it's easy to smarten up when you need to look a little sharper. Pair your dress with tights, patent heels and a structured blazer for a smart-casual look. Add a shiny black belt to nip you in at the waist and pull your look together. If the print feels too flirty and playful, chic black accessories will add a serious element to your look.

    Get cosy

Throw on a cosy knitted cardigan to make your dress work for transitional spring days. Adding contrasting fabrics will give your outfit more interest so don't be afraid to opt for embellished knits. Add a chic scarf in a clashing print to stay on top of this season's clashing print trend. Resist the temptation to reach for the same old black opaque tights on chilly days. Try woolly, ribbed or coloured tights to shake things up. If you do opt for coloured, stick to deep shades like dark maroon for a flattering finish.

    Go glam

Glam up your dress with a pair of killer heels or sandals. A feminine dress and strappy sandals is oh-so flattering and easy wear for summer parties. Struggle with stilettos? Try a pair of wedges that will work for daytime or evenings. Add a cute clutch and slick of bright red lipstick for the perfect party look. Need some extra sparkle? Throw on a statement necklace or bold cocktail ring to really pull your look together.

    Make it a skirt

It's easy to throw on a trench or jacket over your dress, but if you want to totally transform your overall look, wear it as a skirt. Wear a crew neck sweater over the top for casual, off-duty days. Dress got a collar? Let your collar peek out of your sweater for a pretty and preppy finish. Add a pair of ballet flats and satchel bag for a laidback, daytime look.

    Switch the shoes

Nothing transforms a dress quicker than changing your shoes. Want to put a masculine or vintage stamp on your look? Brogues should be the way to go. Add ankle boots with a heel for a fashion edge or try simple ballet flats for a feminine finish.
