Water or fluid retention (of the abdomen) is a state where the body holds on to water, causing swelling and sometimes tenderness. It increases on a high salt or carbohydrate diet or just before menstruation in women. Fluctuations in weight can often be due to water retention, rather than actual weight loss or gain through diet or exercise. A way to ease water retention is to drink plenty of water or cranberry juice.
