Someone who omits meat and fish from their diet. Vegetarian diets are often plant-based, containing plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, eggs, beans and dairy products, as well as fat and sugar. As meat is avoided, the intake of protein and iron may be reduced if not replaced with other sources such as beans, tofu and nuts. Vegetarianism can be practised for health reason, as it is typically lower in saturated fat, or for ethical reasons.
