How To Create Twists – SS12

While some models at Dior were treated to slightly tousled twists, others were left with glossy glamorous updos loaded with shine illustrating just how versatile the style is.

Hairdresser Lee Stafford explains that recreating the look is simple. ‘All you need are hair pins but ensure that you have blow dried your hair straight before you start to create the look if you want a sleek finish. Apply my Lee Stafford Double Blow Mousse (£5.49) to damp hair before blow drying in order to gain added volume and hold.’

‘To create the classic twists seen at Dior, all you have to do is twist sections of hair into different directions from the neck upwards, then secure the hair at both sides with pins and grips. Make sure the ends of your hair are hidden by tucking them in the twist and securing with more pins’

‘Finish with a spray of Lee Stafford Hold Tight Firm Hold Hairspray (£5.49) or Poker Straight Dehumidifier (£5.89) – it helps prevent flyaways and will hold your hair in place. If you want to take your twist from day to night, add some pearl ended grips as seen at Chanel’s SS12 show,’ suggests Stafford.

Charlize Theron’s bold take on the twist saw volume at the sides rather than at the back of the hair, although the style would suit a summer wedding, it’s one best saved for special occasions rather than an everyday look.

Aaron Carlo, Art Director at Headmasters, has shared his top tips and products for recreating a more wearable look. ‘I love L'Oreal Techni Art Pli (£10.50) for grip and it works best sprayed onto damp hair and dried in with a hairdryer. Finish with L'Oreal Techni Art Beach Fizz (£9.99) to give an undone feel which will make it younger and fresher.’

‘To create your twist, pull hair back into a loose pony with your hands and create a line of grips to ear to ear, back brush the ends and then roll up the hair and tuck ends in with waved pins. Massage all the flyaway ends out to make it look pretty, ethereal and not too done.’

‘As hair grips are your base, my top tip is to so make sure they’re tight to the scalp - when you have a good strong base it’s much easier to create the look. Pin waved pins into the grips to keep them sturdy,’ Carlo advises.

At Margaret Howell’s spring summer 2012 show, models with glossy coloured hair had locks coiffed into a groomed version of the twist. With little volume other than slight backcombing at the crown, the glamorous updos were smooth and sleek.

Bree Davie, Director from Trevor Sorbie’s Hampstead Salon, suggests ensuring you have all the tools you need to hand before starting to style your locks. ‘The best tools for recreating the groomed twists spotted at Margaret Howell are Trevor Sorbie Bobby Pins (£2.89) and Trevor Sorbie Hair Elastics (£3.09) – both are integral to the style, as they’ll ensure the hair stays in place all day to give a polished appearance.’

‘This style works best on day-old hair so for the perfect hold use Trevor Sorbie’s Beautiful Volume Dry Shampoo (£5.10) on hair that hasn’t been washed for 1-2 days to add texture and grip. If you’re working with freshly-washed hair, prep your hair properly by blow-drying it straight with a smoothing product or if your hair is fine, use a mousse to add body before styling,’ suggests Davie.

With softly sculpted waves swept into a side parting to frame her face and lengths pulled back into a voluminous low twist, Keira Knightley added a Forties feel to the classic style.

To coif hair into a similar shape, Paul Percival and Adam Reed, co-founders of Percy & Reed, suggest pulling back hair into a ponytail to begin. ‘Firstly, apply Percy & Reed’s Fabulous Fabulousness Dry Shampoo (£12) to plump the hair and give it texture, then pull your hair back into a ponytail, split the ponytail into two, back comb both ponytails, twist back into themselves and then pin the hair into place.’

‘You can tame fly aways around the hair line with Percy & Reed Reassuringly Firm Session Hold Hairspray (£12) but try not to smooth the hair too much though as you want a bit of texture.’

‘To keep your style as frizz-free as Knightley’s, Percy & Reed Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational Volumising No Oil Oil (£14) is a life safer; it makes even the most unmanageable locks smooth, sleek and shiny whilst nourishing and replenishing,’ explain the pair.

Backstage at Christian Dior, the feel was decidedly relaxed with models sporting roughly blow dried locks coiffed into twisted chignons that were pinned just above the neck, while the hair around the face was left wispy and wild to augment the blithe mood.

To copy the catwalk style at home, Bruce Masefield, Vidal Sassoon’s UK Creative Director suggests focussing on getting your blow dry right. ‘Apply Vidal Sassoon’s Halo Hydrate (£17.15) to wet hair. Blow dry the roots for a slight lift before working on the mid length and ends of the hair. Once the hair is 90% dry turn your head upside down to give it texture as this will achieve the foundation of your twist.’

‘As the styles spotted at Dior have an unstructured feel to them, the hair can easily be rolled into shape and pinned into place quickly. Either roll hair up loosely and pin it in place or tie hair back into a sleek ponytail and then twist the ponytail back on itself and secure it with bobby pins that match the colour of your hair.

‘Although the style is meant to have a diffused softness, adding a quick spritz of Sassoon’s Professional Motion Hold and Spray Shine (£12.75) will add a shot of shine and hold your twist in place all day,’ explains Masefield.

Reese Witherspoon’s red carpet worthy style saw her hair pinned back into a low twist before the hair at the front of her face was swept to one side and given a boost of volume.

Tina Farey, Editorial Director of the RUSH artistic team, suggests adding mousse to damp locks to create the perfect base to work from. ‘Add a handful of L’Oreal’s Volume Riche Mousse (£8.60) to damp hair before spraying in L’Oreal Professional spray delight (£12.60) section by by section to create a gritty, easy to work with texture when you blow dry locks’

‘To create your twist, simply hold both side sections and twist three times. Grip into place – use a doughnut to roll the back section up and secure using long pins. My top secret tip is to use a pin tail comb to smooth the hair around the doughnut as you roll the hair in.

‘Use a drop of Kerastase Crystalist (£14.11) to smooth the front twist and L’Oreal Crystal Gloss (£9.50) to fix anti frizz to protect and hold,’ Farey concludes.
