Top 10 UK baby names for 2012

The most (and least) popular baby names chosen by British parents in the last 12 months have been revealed

Old-school, traditional names have topped the baby names list in the UK for 2012. The top names for boys and girls were Ethan and Eva, respectively.

According to research by a baby naming website, the most popular names the past few years have been traditional, with Oliver, Charlie and Jack dominating parental choices for boy and Amelia, Alice and Ella being popular for girls.Ethans and Evas will be filling nurseries in the next few years ©Rex

Traditional names were also the most popular in the US list released earlier this month.

More modern and hyphenated names have dropped in favour in 2012, with names such as Gracie-Mai, Charlee, Truman and Trent falling out of fashion.

Chief Editor of BabyNames.co.uk, Siobhan Thomas said: "Since 2011, vintage names such as Eve, Ava, Benjamin, Max, Harry and Poppy have been on the rise and this is set to continue in 2013. However, we think that this will be the ‘last wave’ for this trend, and old fashioned names may fall out of favour."

Of course the name a certain Prince and Duchess decide on for their expected child is predicted to have a big impact on baby names in 2013.
