Time to ditch the day-glo: The AW13 season is coming and it's all matte lips, petal pinks and flawless skin

Embrace your dark side this autumn with deep, red-berry hues and bare skin

When it comes to AW 13/14 make up trends, you can start by throwing out the day-glo lip gloss, because this autumn - the prettiest pouts will be sporting delicate, matte lip stains in petal pinks.

There'll still be plenty of opportunity to channel your dark side though, as darker lip stains will also be popular - think deep, berry-red hues worn with bare skin.

And, talking of bare skin, it's time to start taking care of your complexion, because the big trend this autumn will be flawless, gorgeous skin, but with plenty of powder being used to create a velvety finish - what the experts refer to as a "matte satin" look.

If you've got cash to splash, now's the time to invest in a sonic cleansing tool such as the Clarisonic, which were used at some of the A/W 13/14 shows to give skin extra luminosity.

Nails are one of the few places you'll see bright pops of colour. Examples are the show-stopping, tomato-red talons seen on the catwalk at Meadham Kirchhoff, Valentino and Topshop Unique, while blood-red nails were equally popular - a look which looks great when teamed with natural make up.

Go goth

This autumn, think bold, but not bright, for eyes. Channel your inner goth with metallic purples and gunmetal greys, as seen on the models at Marc Jacobs.

Smatterings of glitter or metallic finishes were used to add a splash of sex appeal, but remember that such bold looks are best worn with a bare lip. Those brave enough might consider recreating the look seen at Donna Karan, where eye shadow was worn from the lash line to the brow, spreading out from the eyelid for a winged effect.

If you're a fan of the natural look, a light dusting of gold eye shadow or a dusting of iridescent powder is an equally effective way to channel the metallic trend.

If you're feeling really brave, go for full-on glitter and take inspiration from Christian Dior - make up artist Pat McGrath coated models' lips with pink, berry and bronze glitter.

A/W 13/14 will see the popularity of thick, graphic streaks of eyeliner start to wane. Instead, eyes will be defined with neat, skinny lines drawn along the top lash, as seen at the catwalk shows of Victoria Beckham and Alexander Wang.

The news that big brows will continue to reign will probably be met with both disappointment and relief. If you're a fan of finely-plucked brows, put down the tweezers and consider letting nature take its course - if only for a week or two.

Remember that bushy and bold doesn't mean messy, so use a brow pencil in a shade darker than your natural brow colour to emphasise your brows and fill in any gaps, and dab on an eyebrow gel to tame any strays.

Plaits appeal

Wannabe Heidis should look to Valentino's shows, where models sported neat ponytails with braids worn around the middle of the head.

If you're not one for braids, the good news is that the natural looks seen on the catwalks of A/W 13/14 are expected to be big news this autumn - think neat centre partings with a few loose strands around the sides - and hair at Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior was swept into loose-but-neat up-dos.

However, product fans shouldn't despair as there's still plenty of styles for those who love to hit the bottle. Slicked-back, wet-look hair is expected to be popular this autumn and winter (use serum to tame fly-aways and add shine) and it's worth ordering bulk supplies of hairspray for the chignons which we'll soon be seeing - a look which proved particularly popular at Chanel's A/W 2013/14 shows, with slightly messier versions being seen at Versace.
