The London Olympics 2012: Fashion, festivals and food

The greatest sporting event on earth is coming to Great Britain in exactly one year’s time! The Olympic Games will be held in London from 27th July – 12th August 2012 followed by the Paralympics games from 29th August-9th September 2012.

With only 365 days to go, excitement about the Olympics is hitting a fever pitch. So let’s take a look at the fun festivals, food and fashion that will take place at London 2012.

Stella McCartney for Team GB

With fashion designer Stella McCartney as creative director of Adidas Team GB collection kit, our athletes are surely destined to bring home the gold.

McCartney has designed both the athlete and fan kits using Adidas’ sportswear technology.

Already available to purchase, the Team GB limited edition fan wear collection has combined McCartney’s skill for functionality and style in various sportswear designs. The leisure collection features ‘Team GB’ vests, hoodies and shorts incorporating a swirl of the team colours with red, white and blue suitable for the gym.

To celebrate the countdown to the Olympic Games, Adidas have opened a temporary pop-up shop at Westfield London to showcase the latest London 2012 collection. Olympic fans will have 30 days from 27th July to get hold of the best bits from the collection!

Great Britain’s McCartney-designed apparel will go head-to-head with Puma’s kit for Jamaica, designed by fashion designer Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae royalty Bob Marley.

The London 2012 Festival
The London 2012 Festival will mark the finale of the four-year Cultural Olympiad, taking place from 21 June to 9 September 2012.

Four years ago, the Cultural Olympiad was announced as an opportunity for artists to be part of London 2012 and inspire creativity across all forms of culture, especially amongst young people.

The 2012 festival will bring leading artists in art, music, film and theatre together with the community in a series of events across the country to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics coming to the UK.

This includes:
- BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend 2012 – Hackney marshes plays host to BBC Radio 1’s biggest-ever live event with home grown talent – Leona Lewis and Plan B have already signed up and a host international artists are expected to perform.

- Hogmanay - Edinburgh’s New Year street party will be the first in a series of events to be staged in Scotland as part of the London 2012 Festival.

- Big Dance - The world’s biggest dance party comes to the UK for the first time. Dance organisations will host events in unusual venues, for all ages and all forms of dance it will be like a huge flash dance with several million participants expected in 2012.

As well as many more cultural events, that will continue to be announced throughout the year.

The world’s largest McDonald’s
Visitors will have no trouble locating a place to grab some fast food as the athletes’ village in Stratford, east London, is expected to be home to the largest McDonald’s restaurant in the world.

It will span 3,000 square meters – equivalent to half the length of an American football field - over two storeys, and is expected to serve 1.75 million meals over the 29 days of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

McDonald’s plans to offer their broadest menu with items including porridge and Happy Meals with fruit, vegetable and dairy options available to accommodate sporting-loving fans with a healthy diet.

McDonald’s UK vice-president Steve Easterbrook told the Daily Mail: “In our main restaurant at Olympic Park, every hour will be three times as busy as our current busiest outlet in the UK.”

“Around 14 million meals will be sold, of which a McDonald's meal will be one in five.”

The fast food outlet's UK chief executive Jill McDonald has called the announcement 'hugely exciting.'
