Skinny Jeans Make Woman Collapse, And Other Clothes That Might Hurt You

After a woman had to be cut out of her skinny jeans for 'squatting in them', we take a look at other seemingly innocuous clothing trends that have sinister consequences for our health

A 35 year old woman had to be cut out of her skinny jeans after spending too long 'squatting' in them, a timely reminder that our clothes are trying to kill us.

The Australian woman in question was moving house and spent so much time squatting on her haunches emptying cupboards that she developed 'compartment syndrome'. Her legs ballooned and went numb, then she fell over and coudn't get up again.

The condition is caused by the compression of the muscles and restriction of the blood supply by constricting items of clothing such as tight denim.

But skinny jeans aren't the only item of clothing causing serious harm to our health. We can all guess that high heels can cause ankle breakages and waist trainers are bad for our internal organs, but other clothes can do the damage too... Such as:

Neck Ties

Take the humble neck tie. It can give you GLAUCOMA. For real! A study in the early 2000s found that neck ties significantly increase the pressure of the fluid in the eyeball which can lead to the blindness-causing condition. Loosen the ties, chaps.

Radioactive Belts

In 2013 hundreds of ASOS shipments of belts studded with radioactive metal were recalled after Cobalt-60 was discovered in them. An argument broke out between ASOS and the supplier used, but many of the belts are probably still out there. If worn for more than 500 hours they can have serious health implications.

Bras

A little research and it seems we could run a whole article just on how bras are trying to kill you. But we like bras, they're so supportive of us.

However, you should definitely not wear them to bed. The tightness and underwireness can lead to cysts, pigmentation and even edema (by blocking lymphatic drainage). Let 'em free at night, ladies.

Flip Flops

They seem so innocuous but flip flops are very bad wear for your feet, which is bad as we love them so much. The main problem is the lack of arch support, but they also cause your toes to curl unnaturally to keep them on and offer no shock absorbption when you walk or run. All these can lead to minor or even major foot, shin knee and even back pain.

Fine on the beach, not great all day every day.
