    Simple makeup rules for brunettes

I've been brunette all of my life and although I've dabbled with the occasional highlights, I've never strayed more than a shade or two away from my natural colour. With that said, I've picked up a few key beauty tricks that I know are foolproof. Choosing the right makeup colours can make the difference between looking washed and looking fresh and glowing. Here are my key beauty rules to make the most of your brunette locks.

    Red lips

Red lipstick was made for brunettes. Many of my blonde friends say they can't quite pull it off or it looks cartoonish but I'm yet to meet a brunette that can't work the classic red lip with ease. I adore shades of coral which really pop against my olive skin and dark hair. Pale shades of lipsticks like pink and pale brown look plain wrong with my darker colouring. A classic red lip oozes glamour and sophistication and it's an easy way to vamp up your look.

    Defined brows

Thanks to dark hair, eyebrows are really noticeable on brunette women. Fuller brows are universally flattering and will add a youthful feel to your look. For women that have dyed their locks brunette, it's essential to get your brows tinted. Dark, shaped brows frame your face and can make you feel 'made up' even when you have very little makeup on. If you prefer to shape your own rather than visit a pro, invest in a decent set of tweezers and only ever pluck in bright natural daylight. Blonde women may be able to be a little bit more relaxed about the odd stray strand, but those of us with dark hair need to stay on top of unruly brows.

    Deep eyeliner

I feel like my eyes can get lost against my thick brunette hair so I'm rarely seen without eyeliner on. I apply Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner to my upper lash line to frame my eyes. Black eyeliner paired with brunette hair can look super-sultry when applied properly. Brunettes can also pull off other deep shades such as plum, brown or deep greens for a more exotic look. I switch to other colours in summer when my skin is more tanned to change up my look. Opt for products that contain hints of gold rather than silver that will suit your colouring better. Although my lashes are dark and I don't need much colour, I always opt for a lengthening mascara to really open up my eyes. For something subtler, brown mascara should be your go-to product.

    Warm shades

Stick to warm colours to freshen up your complexion. Cool colours can make you look washed out and tired. I always wear a warm peachy blush to contour my cheekbones. Neutral eye shadows and earthy colours like browns, nudes and creams are universally flattering on brunette women. Gold and bronze-based highlighters are easy for brunettes to wear, particularly in summer or on olive complexions.

    Hydrated hair

I'm addicted to my straighteners and if I'm not careful my strands can become quickly damaged and dry. Brunette hair is typically full of natural shine but I ensure my locks stay in tip top condition with a decent hair care routine. I use Brilliant Brunette shampoo by John Frieda which is specially formulated to add shine to brunette hair. I also treat my locks to a deep conditioning treatment once per week to replenish lost moisture. Whether I wear my hair in a ponytail or straight and sleek, I always finish with a touch of serum for added glossiness. Shiny, healthy brunette hair is a real head turner so make it your crowing glory.
