Rihanna wins Topshop lawsuit against unlawful image use

Bajan singer took Sir Philip Green to court over unauthorised use of her face on the Rihanna Tank top

Rihanna has won her lawsuit against Sir Philip Green's Topshop over the store's usage of her image on their clothing.

The 25-year-old singer took the store to court over her image rights after Topshop released a t-shirt emblazoned with her face.

By producing the 'Rihanna Tank', the Where Have You Been singer successfully accused the chain of "passing off" the design as authorised by her.

Topshop refuted the claim but today a judge ruled in Rihanna's favour, stating that a "substantial number" of customers would have been deceived into the "false belief" that the singer had given the t-shirts her seal of approval.

Mr Justice Birrs went on to say that the t-shirt, which was sold by Topshop in 2011 and 2012, actually represented a loss of control over her reputation in the "fashion sphere".

He also said that it was up to Rihanna and not Topshop to decide what garments the public thought were endorsed by the Bajan singer.

Rihanna launched a line with rival British high-street label River Island in March this year and her third collection will be released in September.
