Is your pint of beer sweeter than a Barcardi Breezer?

Real ale found to have almost double the amount of sugar as alcopops loved by the young and sweet of tooth

Tucking into a tasty real ale from a your local brewery might be a treat that's on the increase, as we shun mass-produced lager in favour of artisan beer, but underneath that healthy golden glow, your pint may be hiding a dark secret.

And that secret is sugar. Nine teaspoons of it per pint, according to nutritionists, which is a teaspoon more than the recommended daily amount for a man (and women can only have six teaspoons).

It comes as a bit of a suprise. We know that alcopops such as Barcardi Breezer and Smirnoff Ice are loaded with sugar (they make our teeth hurt just thinking of them) but it's not what you'd expect from an ale.

According to the research reported on the MailOnline, the high levels are due to sugar or honey being added to the beers by their brewers to create the desired taste. And if you're looking to lower your sugar levels you'd be better off opting for a Guinness, a G&T or even a bottle of Magners. Yes, really.
