Diana is the people’s choice for Kate Middleton’s baby name, according to Yahoo! readers

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge should honour Prince William’s late mother says a poll of almost 29,000 people

Kate Middleton should take baby name inspiration from husband Prince William’s late mother Diana, according to a poll of Yahoo! readers - ahead of the bookies' favourite Princess Alexandra.

In a poll of nearly 29,000 Yahoo! readers, Princess Diana was the most popular royal baby girl name with 35 per cent of the vote.

According to betting agency Ladbrokes, Princess Alexandra is still the most likely title with the odds slashed from 10/1 to 2/1 in under a day.

But less than a third of voters chose this option in our independent poll.

Princess Victoria was the third most popular option with 15 per cent of the vote, with readers wanting the couple to take inspiration from the UK's longest-reigning monarch.

And Prince William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, was also popular with nearly 3,000 votes.

Frances, Mary and Anne made up the rest of the list – with Prince William’s auntie, Anne, the least popular name inspiration.

The odds of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge having a baby girl are currently higher - 1/3 with the chance of a boy 5/2 – but George is currently the most likely boys' name.
