A widely practised form of exercise, Pilates is similar to yoga in that it incorporates specific poses, stretches and movements combined with breathing techniques. It is a body conditioning exercise class which aims to build endurance and strength in the muscles through holding poses, as well as improving flexibility. It engages the core, arms, hips and back, with a focus on the alignment of the spine and pelvis to create stability and support. Available in most gyms and fitness centres, or easily practised at home as minimal equipment is required.
