Phytonutrients, or phytochemicals, are derived from plant material, such as fruits and vegetables, and can act as antioxidants to protect the body from harmful free radicals. They are biologically active chemicals said to fight against diseases such as cancer and lung disease. Often the level of phytonutrients in a plant determines its superfood status. Blueberries, broccoli and tomatoes are all good sources of phytonutrients.
