Hairdressing icon and inventor of the 'bob' Vidal Sassoon has died, age 84. He leaves behind a legacy as one of the most influential hair stylists in the business and will be remembered for his signature, trendsetting cuts and for styling some of world's most famous celebrities.

He definitely had his fans. In 1959, Martha Stross (wife of film producer Alfred Stross) woke up in Italy and just had to have her hair done by Vidal Sassoon - in London! The cut cost her husband £62: £55 for a return flight from Italy to London and £7.7s for the hairdo. That's roughly the equivalent of £1,183 today.
