Well nice piccies of the checkout women in the 50s/70s styl dresses -why dont' they try dressing a few of them like this now - might just make their stores a bit more appealing....
despite the way that Tesco usually steamroller into town centres and districts to get new stores built no matter what objections.............

In Bath on Bathwick Hill a chap called Ken Smith ran a grocery shop for over 30 years,he sold all fresh vegtables from peoples allotments, cakes that old ladies baked from the old peoples home over the road, a massive 1p sweet stand for all the schoolkids and would deliver shopping for the elderly or infirm , they could just ring him up and he would drop it off or even another customer would if passing. If you didnt have enough money or an old dear forgot her purse,Ken would just tally it up for next time. The kids would stop in on their way home and ask Ken and some of the old dears for stories to help with their homework. It was on a busy road ,so Ken would help the old folks and kids cross to get to and from his shop. He would take in peoples parcels etc and at Xmas take orders for poultry etc and the farmer would deliver it .
THEN the building next door became empty and was sold to a mystery buyer.............
who left it empty for a year ,so it got smashed up and people complained that it was an eyesore.....then the owner HARWOOD put in planning for a supermarket,to open 24/7 and they would pay for a pedestrian crossing and road improvements inculding taking away some parking to create a dedicated loading bay for their store.. There was uproar about it but HARWOOD knew what they were doing..put in over the top plans to open 24/7 but sweeten it with spending £1000s on a crossing and road improvements ,let everyone complain about it ,then at the very day of the council making a decision, put in revised plans for restricted opening but leave in all the sweetners, therefore all the objections about opening 24/7 were dismissed and any other objections were overruled by the fact that they were going to spend £1000s on road improvements, something everyone had been asking the council to do for years but never had the money. The council gave planning permission and the hoardings went up ,and it became obvious who HARWOOD were.....the signs said it all. They were TESCOS really, it was just a subsidery of TESCOs who applied for the planning , so as not to attract a load of objections!!
Needless to say, poor Kens shop could never compete and sadly closed in a matter of months .
Tescos have no morals, they could of offered to buy Kens shop at a little over market value, gave him a decent goodwill payment and let hime close down and retire in peace.
Instead he had to sell his stock at a pittance and then try to sell his shop ,which is hard seeing as its got limited appeal next to a Tescos!!! 3 yrs on its still empty and his is desperate to sell it so he can just retire and not worry...

Are you sure he is desperate to sell it??? I only ask because Ken Smith of Bathwick Stores died over 2 years ago from pancreatic cancer.

if the small shop was so fantastic at what it did, why were the customers so lacking in loyalty?

GREAT! Yet in chichester (down the road from Goody Goodwood)the tesco express is the worst one you would ever be served in.I bet they had better staff there didn't they?

Are you educated, Snaphappy? It's Tesco, not Tescos.

what a load of tosh, these three "models" look like something out of a 50s american tv show, where is their uniform? If my memory serves me right it was a bry-nylon red checked overall...and what's that poster behind, aren't they obliged to sell at the price that is advertised?
      • Cherry 7 months ago
        models??? really?? I disagree
      • Paul 7 months ago
In answer to your question, No they are not obliged to sell at the signed price unless they have a policy statement to do so. Any signage showing a price is purely "an invitation to treat" under English contract law. Inviting you to make an offer where negotiations can commence. You are right about the red nylon uniforms which I remember were the most unflattering garment.

Second that with Paul. If it were true that they had to sell at that price (a lot of people believe that to be the case), then if they accidentally published a price of £599 for a jar of coffee instead of £5.99 you'd be legally obliged to pay for it once have taken it to the till.

i know someone that worked for tescos they treat the staff like #$%$

Indeed, as a former employee i remember in tesco my manager used to sneak about the toilet area - timing staff on the potty. Five minutes was a satisfactory poop time according to him.
However i was infamous in tesco for challenging managers decisions so one day i decided to ask my line manager (supervisor) where exactly in the employee hand book did such protocols exist, he replied "get back to work".

I can well believe that. I've heard a number of bad things about Tesco these last 3 or 4 years. I used to work in a big cash & carry store, and we once had an Assitant General Manager who was an ex Tesco Manager. He was pretty strict and usually rather pushy as well. Eventually though, he became apparently a bit fed up, and then left the company!

27m - that's almost unbelievable - I've worked under some ruddy unreasonable Managers in a big store - I don't like to recall many of the unpleasant episodes. But what you put really takes the pack of Mcvities digestives! How intrusive and nasty can they get? Did you ever make a formal complaint against the Manager you mentioned?

I well remember Tesco in the 1960s and there was absolutely nothing as glamorous as the three women pictured here to be found there. It was actually quite a dreary supermarket chain then and considered very inferior to Sainsburys. I have no wish to return to the 60s version.
    • Nikki  •  7 months ago
These are not 1960's dresses...as pointed out by quite a few people!!! . The dresses reflect the 1970's version of the 1950's. If you're going to do it...at least TRY and get it right. If you meant to reflect the actual people who worked in Tesco, then ask people who actually worked there then! And if you wanted to reflect the fashions of the era...again ask someone who knows about these things!! I thank you!!

My mother would not be seen dead in Tesco in the 60's and definately not now.

If you bring back the sixties you bring back my Father's Grocery shop where we took orders over the phone, packed them in boxes and delivered them to the customer's home. Once Tesco's appeared my Father went out of business! Strange how Tesco's now deliver - the difference is they charge for it and it isn't as personal as our service was!

The old products and packaging looked good, but when you opened the items you could actually buy.............. Guess what......... the product was actually a modern day item......ie they wrapped a modern day item with an old style wrapper lol.............. two wrappers for the price of one lol
    • helen  •  7 months ago
Funny, look more 50's style to me. Thought it was beehives and mini skirts in the 60's?
    • maggie  •  7 months ago
The dresses featured on pages 1 and 3 have more than a whiff of the 1950's about them. Halter necks, wide skirts, boleros etc. Where are the chic shifts and minis of the 60's ?
Perhaps Tesco should lower their prices even more !
    • jodie  •  7 months ago
Nobody went to the shops in those dresses girls it was the 60's not Hollywoods golden era

In 1969, I invested £50 in Tesco shares, They were 10pence halfpenny each (in real money, before decimalisation). I still have them. Best investment I made. I wish I had more money to invest, but my salary was about £600 a year!
