Mum spends thousands on pink baby goodies for a girl - only to give birth to a baby boy

A first time mum is having to entirely rethink her nursery design as her baby girl was born a boy

A first-time mum is more than likely struggling with a sense of gender disappointment after giving birth to an unexpected baby boy.

Mum-to-be, Sarah Sharples spend thousands kitting out her baby's nursery and wardrobe in perfect pink - as doctors told her she was expecting a little girl. But when baby arrived, it turned out he's a boy.

Sarah spent £3,000 on pink baby goodies such as clothes and nursery furniture and splashed out £900 on a rosy pram. She even made sure every basic, from the feeding bottles to the bath, were bought in the traditional girly colour.

Doting parents Sarah and husband Lee, 37, decided on a Lily-Mae as a name and had it stencilled on the pink nursery wall.  But then at only 36 weeks, Sarah went into labour and was astounded when she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.

Now she and Lee are left with the challenge of changing everything for their new son, Joseph.

Sarah, from Blyth, Northumberland, said: "I couldn't understand it when the midwife said it was a boy.

"All our scans had confirmed it was a girl and I had everything prepared in pink. We had picked her name, Lily-Mae, and had the room decorated with her name stencilled across the pink feature wall.

"We even had personalised blankets as gifts from family and friends."

When Sarah found out she was pregnant her and her husband were sure they wanted to know the sex so that they could be fully prepared for everything to come.

At their 20-week-scan they found out it was a girl and were ecstatic to welcome their 'little princess'.

Friends and family bought lots of clothes and accessories in pink as gifts and the spending began to mount up.

She said: "It was my first baby and so we had to buy all the essentials.

"I wanted everything to be perfect for her so that she would want for nothing. Being prepared was my main concern and seeing as I knew I was having a girl I didn't see the harm in buying everything in pink."

Remembering the birth, Sarah said: "The midwife said to Lee that there was something we needed to see.

"I instantly started panicking thinking what could possibly be wrong. She then said she wanted to congratulate us on the birth of our son.

"We looked at each other and couldn't believe that Lily-Mae was actually a boy.

"We decided to name him Joseph as we didn't think he would appreciate the name Lily-Mae."

"The nursery is now redecorated with a Monsters Inc. theme so we think Joseph will prefer that to a pink room."
