Movie Food: Movie inspired baking

Here's our pick of the best movie cakes!

Have you ever loved a movie so much that it inspired you to get into the kitchen and bake?  These bakers have - from Despicable Me to Toy Story, check out these amazing movie-inspired bakes.

Despicable Me: Minion Cake

This fantastic minion cake was created by Loren Ebert, who blogs at The Baking Sheet. It consists of two layers of triple chocolate fudge cake and one layer of vanilla cake. It has an Oreo buttercream filling, dark chocolate ganache and vanilla buttercream crumb-coat, all finished with fondant. We’re not sure which minion it is, but it’s pretty impressive.

Corpse Bride Cake

Heather at the blog Sprinklebakes.com created this realistic blue velvet cake to mark the release of Tim Burton’s film The Corpse Bride. It took around eight hours to make and she said most of that time was taken up sculpting the main figure of Emily. If you want to make one yourself (yes, really), Heather has a step by step Corpse Bride cake tutorial you can follow on her blog.

Superman Cookies

These might look tricky to make, but all you need is a template, some icing and a food colouring pen. Once you’ve filled in the yellow and red icing (leaving it to dry inbetween) you just trace around the outline in black. You can find a full tutorial of these Superman cookies on the blog The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle.

Butterbeer Cupcakes

Inspired by the iconic drink from the Harry Potter books and films, Kristen of the blog Pastry Affair made these cupcakes. ‘The butterbeer cupcake is essentially a brown sugar cupcake infused with cream soda and butter flavours’, she says. They’re also filled with a butterscotch ganache, topped with butterscotch buttercream and then drizzled with more ganache. We reckon Harry, Ron and Hermione would love them.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow Cake

This cake, inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow, recently won gold at the Cake International exhibition held at the NEC earlier this month. It was created by Lara Clarke of Tasty Cakes and stands 5 feet 5 inches tall. Lara posted photo updates to her Facebook page while the huge cake was being created, and she’s also made a life-sized Grinch, too.

Nightmare Before Christmas Wedding Cake

Couples looking to tie the knot are increasingly opting for non-traditional wedding cakes - and this is a striking one, based on the film The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was created by Charm City Cakes, the bakery founded by Chef Duff Goldman - and features Burton-esque spirals and silhouettes, complete with figures of Jack Skellington, Sally and Jack’s dog, Zero.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts in Gingerbread

What do you bake a Harry Potter fan for their birthday? An entire Hogwarts sculpture made out of gingerbread, of course. The gingerbread creation sits on a chocolate cake base and features a cocoa-sugar dusted roof, ice-cream cone towers, sugar-glass windows and marzipan figures. It took the best part of two days to complete. Blogger Meghan, of Cosmo Cookie writes: ‘It was a bold project to take on and I don’t think we expected it to work... we were expecting to burn the gingerbread, burn ourselves with sugar, collapse roofs, knock down buildings or drop the cake, but somehow every step went smoothly. So, bring on the next challenge. I smell a Lord of the Rings cake in my future...’.

Frankenweenie: ‘Sparky’ Cake

Inspired by the film Frankenweenie, Heather at Sprinklebakes created this gorgeous Sparky cake out of grey icing, rolled fondant and grey gumpaste. And although she’s managed to capture the black and white feel of the movie, the inside of the cake is a contrasting bright green. There’s a tutorial on how to make the cake - including the figure of Sparky - on her website.

Gremlins: Gizmo Cake

This amazing 3D Gizmo cake was created by Elizabeth Wilson of Eat Cakes, based in Iowa. It’s made from a lemon cake, a vanilla cake and decorated with lemon buttercream -  with fondant used for the features. Cute, right? Just make sure you keep it away from water and the fridge after midnight. Elizabeth has also made other movie-inspired cakes, including a 3D Mike Wazowski ‘Monsters Inc’ cake.

Toy Story: Mr Potato Head

Nicola from Tattoo Cakes, based in Scunthorpe, created this Mr Potato Head cake, inspired by the Toy Story films. Created from an 8” Madeira sponge, he was made to reward a team of moustache growers last Movember. ‘He took a couple of hours and was all hand-carved, and the extra moustaches were hand-made too from sugar paste’, Nicola told us. Among her other creations, Nicola has also made a Mad Hatter cake, A Rocky Horror ‘lips’ cake and some Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas cupcakes.
