Dietary minerals are chemical elements including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc and iodine, required by the body for essential processes and development. Other minerals include selenium and phosphorus. Minerals regulate bodily fluids, form bones and teeth, are elements of hormones and enzymes in the body and convert food into energy. They are essential nutrients obtained through diet; for example, red meat is a source of iron and bananas are a source of potassium.
