Karl Lagerfeld’s pampered cat is no ordinary kitten

The fashion designer’s Siamese cat has two maids of her own and can use an iPad.

Karl Lagerfeld may be known for his sharp tongue and tough fashion critique but the glove-loving designer has revealed he does have a heart during his latest interview with Women’s Wear Daily.

Towards the end of the interview the Chanel designer talked enthusiastically about his white Siamese cat, Choupette, who he described as a “kept woman”.

The nine-month-old kitten was a gift, in the loosest sense of the word, from Lagerfeld’s muse, model Baptiste Giabaconi. Baptiste asked Lagerfeld to watch the cat for two weeks over Christmas, but two weeks has become six months with the designer explaining he never returned her because “she was too cute.”

“She has lunch and dinner with me on the table, with her own food. She doesn’t touch my food. She doesn’t want to eat on the floor. She sleeps under a pillow and she even knows how to use an iPad,” Lagerfeld told WWD.

The kitten also has servants to tend to her every need. “She has two personal maids, for both day and night,” Lagerfeld added. “She is beyond spoiled.”

Choupette also has a Twitter feed: @ChoupettesDiary went live yesterday morning, with the first tweet, “Baptiste may think he is a muse but only I, Choupette, am Lagerfeld's true muse. Everything from my whiskers 2 my meows inspire.”

Lagerfeld even gets his maids to keep a diary of little Choupette's moods, movements and eating behaviour if he's not with her. “In the nine months, we already have almost 600 pages… I think it could be funny to make a little book of Choupette's diary,” he told WWD.

Choupette’s life of luxury doesn’t extend to her wardrobe, however. Unfortunately we won’t see the kitten dressed up in custom-made Chanel outfits anytime soon, as Karl thinks the act of humanising pets is “circuslike”.

But of course eating at the table and keeping a diary is fine.
