Iceland's new double decker pizza

Frozen food supermarket Iceland is selling a double decker pizza containing almost the entire daily allowance recommended for a woman.

The belly-busting 10in Double Decker Pepperoni Pizza is now on sale across the UK for £3, in the face of warnings from health professionals that obesity could surge to 26 million by 2030.

It consists of two stonebaked pizzas held together with mozzarella cheese, lots of pepperoni and sweet chilli sauce.

Described as “every pizza lover’s dream” it is packed with 9.6g salt, which is more than one-and-a-half times the amount advised for both sexes. It contains 54.4g of fat, of which 20.8g is saturated – this is just over 80 per cent of the advised 25g daily intake for women.

Iceland’s Double Decker Pizza is being endorsed by X Factor star Stacey Soloman, who appears in the TV ad saying her catchphrase “Love it” as she tucks into a slice.

Critics are concerned about the high calorie product that goes against the Food Standards Agency’s targets.

Sian Porter, of the British Dietetic Association, told The Mirror: “A double decker is the equivalent of two pizzas, and the fact that Iceland’s meal is only 10ins in diameter suggests it is just for one person.”

Yahoo! Lifestyle's nutritionist Rachael Anne Hill said: “The mix of sweet from the chilli sauce and sour from the cheese and pepperoni will make this pizza taste particularly moreish which could be a real danger to women to consume one to themselves – something that would be pretty easy to do considering the fact that they are only 10 inches in diameter!

She added: “This product is a classic example of why our nation’s waistlines are expanding quite so rapidly as it is yet another fast, cheap and tasty food that is packed full of fat, calories and salt."

A spokeswoman for Iceland said the pizza is a “fantastic innovation” and explained it is designed to be shared among friends and family, as shown in the advert.

Iceland’s Double Decker Pizza has overtaken that of its supermarket rival Asda, whose version of the same pizza contains 600 fewer calories.

However Tesco still holds the record on the high street as their 12in Deep Crust Pepperoni Pizza contains a gigantic 3,000 calories.
