A grandparent’s role in children’s lives is an incredibly important one - providing love and a sense of belonging to the family. Additionally they save the economy an estimated £4 billion in childcare per year.

In this episode of Bumps, Babies & Beyond, Myleene Klass is joined by grandmother of one, Valerie Ashley. Rather than her grandson, Daniel, be put up for adoption, Valerie made the decision to be a full time carer.

She talks about the ups and downs of looking after a child the second time round and how different things are in today’s society for children.

Over 200,000 grandparents are acting as full time parents to their grandchildren and are experiencing the highs, lows and differences in bringing up a child from the next generation to their own.

Usually retirement is a time for grandparent’s to sit back, relax and enjoy spending time with their family but Valerie’s retirement plans to travel have been put on hold until Daniel is older – something she doesn’t regret.

Bumps, Babies & Beyond with Myleene Klass is a 48-part video series exclusive to Yahoo! Lifestyle.
