H&M admit to using computer-generated fashion models

The models featuring in H&M’s swimwear and lingerie campaigns are fake - literally.

Håcan Andersson, a press officer for H&M, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that most of the model bodies on the site are “completely virtual.”

While many complaints have been made recently about the overuse of airbrushing and digital altering on real women, these models differ because their models bodies are totally computer-generated.

Most consumers browsing the site before may have noticed how unusual it was that every model was posed in the exact same position with a hand on their hip, facing straight on.

H&M admitted to using “facial models” for their website and catalogues, superimposing their heads onto the standard body shape using photo-editing software. The only thing that appears different, apart from the clothing, is the skin tone which is digitally altered to match each model’s face.

Aftonbladet accused the company of using the computer-generated images because H&M were not impressed with the quality of models it was seeing.

The company’s spokesperson disputed that idea saying they only used that method to make the clothes look good.

Andersson said: “It’s not about ideals or to show off a perfect body, we are doing this to show off the garments. This is done for all garments, not just underwear. It applies to both women’s and men’s clothing.”

This method of using computer generated bodies doesn't seem to apply to the ad campaigns on billboards but does happen with the models on H&M's e-commerce site.

Their justification of using this method to make the clothes look desirable has not gone down well with the Scandinavian advertising watchdogs.

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation have criticised H&M for producing an unrealistic physical representation of the female body.

Helle Vaagland of the NBC said: “This illustrates very well the sky-high aesthetic demands placed on the female body. The demands are so great that H&M, among the poor photo models, cannot find someone with both body and face that can sell their bikinis."

It’s understandable that H&M want to slash costs: cutting and pasting outfits onto the same model is surely less expensive than paying out money for a multitude of different models. But now they have admitted to using misleading images, they may have a heavier price to pay with angry consumers.

Do you think H&M’s computer-generated system is clever or completely unnecessary?

lets establish a principle first - h and m are trying to sell clothes and present them to look their best, by showing all their clothes on the same mannequin, in this case a computer generated image, based on the figure that real women like to look at clothes being worn by.

i'm wrong? ok h and m have missed a trick then, they should put their gear on a fatty or a twiggy or a large and lumpy model and that way show off their merchandise to better advantage, or would everybody be passing comments about the model like they do about the weathergirl, or the newsreader, or the latest pop diva, or tennis star?

no, by picking a thin model they ensure you are looking at the clothes not the bum, the boobs, the belly or the bingo wings. what has been a little naif of them has been to vary the face. perhaps they should have computer generated a non-controversial average face to top the doll

in real life, i like to look at other humans, the big the small, the stocky the skinny, the old and the young, we are all beautiful, but this isn't personal - it is just business

live with it or buy your clothes from someone else

this is disgusting ... such a well known company that sells children's clothing using fake , stick thin models is appalling .... The "skinny" look should NOT be promoted to young children and young teenagers.... Anorexia and Bulimia have become more and more popular in 8-12 year old's in the last 4 years because of things like this....

Do you know what is even more popular then anorexia and bulimia? Obesity.

Not all slim people are anorexic.

Disgusting? You've only just noticed now the press have told you to start bleating. I don't suppose that disgust ever occured to you when you look in the shop windows with stick thin manequins? No, thought not. It's only when the press tell you to get upset by a computer image that you kneejerk like you've been told to.

erm excuse me ? Just because i am disgusted by this article it doesn't mean im not disgusted at the thin mannequins ... yeah... don't judge before you look into my words a little more ... thanks!

I noticed this but I thought they only made them all the same so that the "dress them up" outfit range would fit all of them?

Since H&M clothes is so poor quality now, comparing to 2-3 years ago, it does not really matter what they do to make it attractive to a consumer - they are trying too hard - it's not going to work in the long run!

I agree, the clothing is shoddy and looks like it has come from the rag market. It falls to bits after a few wears and washes, or the dye in the jeans is cheap and rubs off onto surfaces that the wearer sits on!!!

I must be very lucky....nothing I've bought from H&M has fallen to bits or had any other problem....very puzzled by comments on this article saying their clothes aren't ok!

I think that this is completely unecessary. To say 'shops show mannequins, so why not add stock modelling images' is a pointless feat. Our brains subconsciously disregard mannequins as being a realistic portrayal of the average human - hence their reasoning for being faceless and often colourless. Hence, little if any damage is done by showing mannequins. But if you show someone a site or book full of actual 'models', then our minds clock on to the fact that it's human; we're given a sense of subconscious realism, thus comparing our own bodies to the models'. Now, if said site or book stated 'the models have been digitally enhanced/edited', this would remove much of the pressure of people wishing to become as skinny as the models, and would also give any legal and sentimental alert to anyone viewing. Now, for anyone saying 'size 16 is obese' - shut it. Just...shut it. Seriously, have you NEVER heard of BMI? Each individual's weight, age, gender and height are put into their BMI, meaning if one woman is size 16, she may be slightly overweight for her situation, whereas another woman would be at a healthy weight. Seriously, if you want to go on about subjecting a particular weight into categories, you should really consider people's situations first, and you might just realise that you CAN'T realistically situate a single size as being anything.Oh, and for anyone saying 'the model's body looks healthy', I think you're missing the point. It's been edited. So underneath all the brushing and blooming and all that #$%$ think of what may have been edited out to make it more 'appealing'.H&M, either put in the effort to hire models or take a picture of the bloody outfit on a white background or something.

H&M clothes accomodate all shapes and sizes. There's enough clothes to make one look stylish. If one doesn;t like what the shop offers, then move on, there's more shops out there...Or go dig the dirt on them too, so everybody'll be happy wearing tablecloth because of too much ethics rubbish
    • lee w  •  5 months ago
does it matter ..... its a fashion thing so you should be just looking at the clothes not whats in them .... if people are that upset generate some bigger models its just pixals at the end of the day
    • H  •  5 months ago
From a modelling background myself, I can imagine it must save them a hell of alot of money booking a studio, plus the professional models with fantastic bodys to pose like that, and a full team of makeup artists etc per shoot. Instead they just simply have to put the heads of the models onto the computer generated bodys and do a bit of editing! Not such a huge surprise, justa bit of a shame- although most fashion models have fantastic bodys like this anyway!
