Choosing your bridal bouquet

Flowers at weddings are traditional, but this doesn't mean you can't add your own modern twist

Choosing your bouquet can be just as tricky as selecting your wedding dress. Start by looking in bridal magazines for inspiration or talk to your local florist for information on what is in season or which varieties are available for your wedding.

Fake flowers or real?

Firstly you need to decide if you want to go for the real deal when it comes to flowers or if you want to fake it. Silk flowers for your wedding bouquet are maybe not as impressive as the real thing but they do have their advantages. Real flowers will start to wilt not long after the celebrations have finished while silk flowers can be kept as they appeared on the day for as long as you want. Silk flowers are a great option if the type of flower you are looking is out of season or unaffordable. Plus, if you want a unique bouquet then fake flowers are available in every possible shade or you can even design your own special flower.

Shape of you and your bridal bouquet

Not only do you need to think about your body shape with your wedding dress choice, but it’s also relevant to the style and shape of your bridal bouquet. If you are a petite bride then choosing a tear drop shaped bouquet will help to elongate your body, or if you’d prefer a round posy then go for a smaller bouquet to keep you in proportion. Taller brides should pick larger bouquets or a smaller teardrop to distract from their height.

Favourite flowers or seasonal bouquets?

You may know instantly which flowers you want to go for; it might be the first flowers your partner bought you or you might have a favourite flower that you know you want to incorporate into the bridal bouquet. If you are still open to ideas then take into consideration the venue and theme of your wedding. If you are having a summer garden wedding then you might want to choose a wild flower bouquet, or if it’s in a formal setting a precise, neat bouquet may be more fitting. Following the flowers of the season is always a good place to start as it makes sourcing them easier and possibly slightly cheaper. Consider adding a personal touch to your bouquet with feathers, jewels and pearls. You can also bring in the theme of the wedding to your bouquet by adding ribbon of different shades.

Something different in your bouquet

If you don’t want to go with the traditional styles of bridal bouquets there are other more creative options. Add a splash of vibrancy with chillies, brambles or strawberries in the bouquet, ideal for cookery lovers. Thistles look great mixed into a bouquet and are perfect for a Scottish wedding. You can go for one simple long stemmed flower with a long sash for extra impact or maybe you don’t want flowers at all, some don’t like to spend money on them if they are not going to last as long as the marriage. Having a winter wedding? Why not wear a fur muff instead? They’re warm, cosy and ideal for keeping your fingers warm for the exchanging of rings. Or, for a summer wedding, you could go for elaborately decorated fans. You can get really creative and make your bouquet out of buttons, sweets, shells, it really doesn’t have to be flowers – it is your day and your choice.

Bridesmaid bouquets

You will want to consider your bridesmaids’ bouquets as it can look very effective to have co-ordinating bouquets. You could go for the same bouquet but on a smaller scale, or reverse the flowers for contrast. You could keep their bouquets very simple with one single stem of one of the flowers you will be carrying. Or if your budget cannot stretch to flowers for your bridesmaids they could carry pretty little bags – perfect for carrying the emergency make-up items for later on. Read more on getwed.com...
